The stock vp44 just died on my truck after nursing it for the last 8000 miles. My truck is out of warrenty and I was thinking of replacing it with a hot rod vp44. Is it worth the money, or is putting a regular vp44 back on it a chipping it better a better deal? Also is there a difference in the pumps on an HO and SO, mine is a 2002 automatic so it has an SO right?

Yes, yours is an SO - and depending upon the extra cost of the HR pump, and/or the warranty it comes with, you very well might be better off power-wise to get a regular VP-44 replacement and apply the extra cost to a good power box like the Edge Comp.

I have the IIS HRVP44 on my 01 HO.

There was a VERY noticeable increase in power across the entire power band. I did not do a pre/post dyno, but have seen graphs on other vehicles. You’ll pick up noticeably more power with the box off, but there are also some nice gains with a fueling box which taps the pump wire. If I recall correctly, it was somewhere around +90hp with box off, and about + 40-50hp with box on.

I have enough fuel now running the HRVP44, MAD ECM, and a set of Mach 4’s, I rarely ever turn on my TST box. The more you rely on the fuel added by a box that is tapping the pump wire, the sorter the life of your VP will be. Good enough reason for me to leave my TST box off most of the time!

As far as warranty, I understand as long as you do not tap the pump wire you have a 1 yr Bosch warranty on either a standard build VP44 or a HR version from IIS. As soon as you tap your pump wire, warranty is gone on both of the pumps (good luck finding a pump builder/supplier that will warranty one!).

I say go for the HRVP44! Its not that much more $$$ and you definitely have a big smile on your face after installing it!

Hey Guys,

All things being equal, are these "aftermarket pumps" built to last longer than a standard rebuilt pump? I was told (and read on this site) that rotary style pumps have an average life of 100,000 miles by their very design.

Thanks

Ron

Go with the HRVP. Noticeable power increase at marginal cost. You will never have enough power so get it every where you can. The only possible downside is a noticeable increase in smoke with no way to eliminate it other than by peddling easier. With just a Comp and a OEMVP you can be stock at the push of a button. Could be helpful if you run into an emmissions problem down the road.

I just had the pleasure of getting the truck emissioned on Tuesday. I happen to have my Mach 4's out of the truck for a problem I am trying to diagnose - I am currently running stock injectors. With the HRVP44, MAD ECM, and a HX40 @ 5300' elevation, the truck had the following opacity:

60MPH = 5%

50MPH = 6%

40MPH = 6%

Passing emissions will not be an issue unless you are already borderline. The only smoke I can make is off boost - then totally cleans up. Can't get my EGT's over 1050 with the stock injectors. The pump is significantly more aggressive (more smoke off boost) - but I never really had any noticeable increase in smoke/egts once boost comes in after putting the pump on. Actually, with the TST cranked up, WAY more smoke w/ immeasurable EGT's - I don't have near enough air to burn the fuel any more! TST off, EGT's stayed about the same.

How is your milage effected with the HRVP?

Can't say I've really notice any difference. On a recent road trip I got 19. 2 MPG on one tank, probably averaged 80-85MPH. Typically getting high 17's to mid 18's commuting my 10 miles to work. I also run 315's. I've never hurt my fuel economy by adding fuel to my truck.

Milage should not ever be effected at hiway speeds. Unless you get some really inneffecient injectors installed.

It only takes so much HP to cruise down the road. Doesn't matter what you are capable of making.

Now, your in town milage may become an issue. :-laf
