I think my vp is on its last legs, and will need to be replaced soon. I would like to replace it with a Hot Rod VP, but do not know which one to get. TST told me that they advance the timing on theirs. Because I have a Edge Comp that theirs would not work because I would then have to much timing. I would like to get some input from people who already have one. I do plan to go much further with the mods on my truck so the pump will have to work with much larger injectors in the future.

How much HP did you gain?

Drivability?

Fuel milage?

Life expentancy?

How well did it work with your other mods?

Thanks for your input

I installed one from industrial in my buddies truck

Power was very noticable. I have been told to expect in the neighborhood of 40hp.

Very driveable, not peaky or wierd. Drives as nice or better than stock.

Milage has not gone down at all

Add a Edge ez, comp, or in my buddies case a Drag Comp, soon to be installed.

Injectors LOVE this thing!

My buddies truck has the HRVP44 from Industrial and RV 275 injectors and is flat ou fun to drive, can't wait till we do the transmission this winter!

I installed the Hot Rod from I. I. that's good for 70-100 horse. Drives nice. A tad more smoke. It works great with the big injectors and the fueling box.

I haven't checked fuel mileage in two years so I can't help you there.

That "romp romp" off of idle is more noticeable.

I had to buy a VP anyway. I figured I might as well upgrade. It's not a hard install. Just do it carefully.

I just installed the HR VP44 from IIDP last weekend.

I haven't seen any real decrease in milage, but the drivabilty is grrrrreat.

Stock injectors, coupled with my Comp once again in EZ mode (no pump tap) Feels like the tapped Comp on level 3.

And I still get a good puff of smoke when the loud pedal gets stomped.

I have also been told that I. I. is Bosch certified and DO bench test each pump that they sell. I will call them soon and post what they tell me.

2 weeks driving now with the Industrial Injections Hot Rod VP44 installed along with Mach 1. 6 injectors and Edge Comp. Very, very noticable power increase! The truck is now a rocket. Got mine from Performance Diesel Warehouse. Doug is a great guy to deal with. He also did the install of the above items, as well as fixing my leaking Vacuum Pump while the VP44 was off. We also installed a J-hook on the waste gate increasing the turbo boost from 20psi to 35-40psi!

The DTT transmission really perked up and shows it's true abilities with these adds. The '01 3500 at wide open full throttle (WOFT) gives a small puff of black smoke even with the Edge turned off. With the Edge set at 1-3 it lays down a good amount of smoke. On 5-5 it fogs and blacks out the road for a good 1/8th mile. I have only run the VP44 on 5-5 a couple of times. The EGT's really start to climb and I worry about cooking the electronics on the VP44 with the Edge Comp cranked up.

In summary the Hot Rod has a louder internal mechanical sound and my truck at idle sounds like it has a cam in it. Very similiar sound to an old muscle car. Brady at Industrial is very knowledgable and will answer any questions you may have. They also build those Phat Shaft Turbo's. The turbo will be my next add this year as I have fallen well into the slippery slope of performance!

BDanner,

I'm installing the Phat Shaft 64 at this very moment. The 35 is almost off. I'm not sure if there is a break-in involved or not.

I'll let you know how it performs with my setup.

The 64 is installed and broken in. It whistles until maybe 15 lbs. and then it just sounds like a rush of air anytime above that.

It jumps from 30 to 50 lbs. instantaneously. It's smooth power and cool air.

And I know it makes great power now. It blew the SBC Con-FE right out of the water. I'll have to turn the box down.

For someone with fueling mods like mine that plans to drive in town a lot, the 62 might be better. I haven't tried it but I think it would be more practical.

Maybe someone with the 62 can comment on that.

As for the Hot Rod VP, I'd like to know exactly what they do to modify it. I'm just curious to know what the upgrades are. It does work well.

All intersting stuff. I may need to get a new VP44 soon, and I might as well start down the slippery slope...

I had a 0216 in my comp on Friday. Had the tech clear it, and then drove 290 miles on Saturday to the NE PA TDR Meet -n- Greet in Avoca. ON the ride home I got the dead pedal again. No accelleration, boost fell off to 8-10 psi, ,and the truck slowed. After letting off the gas and idleing in neutral for a few, it came back and accelerated normally. I'll be stopping by to check the codes after work to see if the 0216 is back.

Hey Leo, long time no see. ;)

I don't have the codes in front of me. They're buried somewhere. What does your code mean?

Hey Tony! 0216= VP Death. Injection pump timing failure. It happened at about exit 274 on I-80 east coming home from the meet. Just a bit outside the AAA free towing range. Made it home with no other occurrences.

Had a great time on Sat. Let me know when the next get together is. Maybe we can find a dyno to handle Red Hots Twins!

I went to the Christmas Cheer party in Derby, CT on Dec. 11th. They told me at the party to look for this crazy guy in Scranton. I tried to reach him through the TDR but he's not active on the board.

And who pulls up at the Meet? That's the neatest welding truck that I've ever seen. Even the welder had a stack.

I'd love to see the twins in action.

And if you decide to change that VP give me a shout. Free tool rental, help, advice, pneumatic tools, a place to work on it ... ... all come with your "membership" to the club !

Oo. Thanks Guys,There is a big truck dyno in Frackville@ Ashland Diesel, just a thought. I know the owner well. Those New England boys know me to gooood :-laf :-laf

My understanding of the HRVP is that it pukes when you tap with wire with a Comp box and crank it up to 5-5. Anybody know anything about this puking situation?? If this HRVP is that much better, I'll have one ordered tomorrow. Please advise.

I tapped the pump wire before I even put the Hot Rod on the truck. And I told I. I. what I was going to do beforehand. And the rig already had Jammer 5's.

No problem. Runs like an animal.

What kind of lip would they give you about covering it under warranty if the pump wire has been tapped?? I need to do a little something to put me over the 600rwhp mark and I think the HRVP will do it as long as I can tap that wire and still get some kind of warranty to help me out when the pump decides enough is enough. Anybody running over Mach 5's (200 extra rwhp) injectors or better with this pump??

I would call them and ask them that. You'll probably get Brett on the phone. Or e-mail them.

With the box and the injectors I've added 275 extra horse.

It's my understanding the electronics as well as the internals are improved over the original VP's that came with our rigs.

i have a hot rod pump an hate it, very rough idle sometimes an drag comp does not work w/ it. blows more smoke w/ comp on but no more power. cant wait to put a stock vp44 back in it. talked to some very reliable sources an they were running on an said also comp does not work with the hot rod pump. just my 2 cents!also power gains not what they claim i dynoed before an after the hot rod pump my gains were 16. 2 hp an 16. 1 tq. :-{}
