Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Hot weather problem

When my 95 gets hot, the alternator, tachometer, A/C, and O/D stop working. I stop and cool off and all works again. Any help appreciated.
 
It could be a few different things causing this. What I suspect is the crank shaft sensor. What I would do, run it till the you see the gauge(s) malfunction. Leave engine running only if you are very mindful of moving parts (fan). Spray something cold on the sensor maybe a can of Duracool or Redtec or ?? If the gauges come back to life, it has to be the crank sensor.

A broken membrane at the back of the instrument cluster would be another suspect.
 
The part snappy refers to (crank sensor) is called a engine speed sensor (ESS) on your 95. It's about a $100 part and can be installed in about 10 minutes. Try cleaning the connection plug and inspect the wires for damage.

The ESS sends a signal to the PCM (powertrain control module - computer) that is needed to turn on the alternator, tach, AC, cruise control, and overdrive. If the ESS is OK then it's your PCM, which is about $500 (if you can find one). The ESS is a simple device - a magnetic sensor encased in epoxy. Not much there to go bad except physical damage to the sensor or wiring. You could also check the 12v supply to the PCM both prior and after it's acting up.

I went through this a few years ago and ended up needing a PCM. Do a search on my past posts to read what I went through.
 
Usually when the Engine Speed sensor/wire broken the tach,charging system, and od(sometimes the speedometer) go out but when the A/C goes out too there is a bad ground to the ESS. (Ground wiire broken some where in the wiring system and you need to run seperate ground to ESS connector. )



But it does sound like the ESS is acting up.
