Part # For Lug Nuts

Well this afternoon I got around to puting on the 16cm housing. All of the bolts have come off with minimal effort except ONE! It is the top rear bolt that holds the housing to the exhaust manifold. The only wrench I can get on it is an open end box wrench because of minimal clearance. I have been soaking it all day with liquid wrench and itermittently trying to remove it - 15mm wrench, hammered on 9/16 wrench, vice grips, etc. You probably have an ide of what this nut is starting to look like!

At this point I plan to soak it over night, heat it with the propane torch and try to remove it with a small pipe wrench - with good placement they can work wonders - and since the nut is already half way hashed, why not?!

Anybody have any other ideas before I get  and break out the sawzall:eek:

If it's just a nut on a stud heat it up and split it in half with a hammer and chisle. Go easy on those threads when you get close.

Gotta grind on a wrench.

I had two Craftsman 15mm boxed end wrenchs. One bravely jumped into the bench grinder untill he could fit in the very restricted area around the stubborn bolt. As I recall, the outside part of the boxed end was down to about 1/8" when it would finaly fit. I tapped it a few times with a hammer once it would fit and the bolt loosened, no problem.

Good luck, Ronnie

Ken, just reread your post, the answer above was directed at a stubborn bolt on the turbo housing, you'll find out which one once you've got the turbo on the workbench. I don't recall a lot of problem getting the turbo off the manafold. I'd give the liquid wrench plenty of time, and if it came down to it, I'd also try heat on the problem nut.

Got it!

After two heatings and some tugging with a 10" pipe wrench I got the bugger off. Spent the rest of the day removing the turbo and swapping housings. Took it for a test drive and notice an improvement all though it is not a big change. Boost kicks in a little sooner and I see more boost in second gear than I did before. Turbo sounds a little different/little louder too. Overall it is more driveable and not as much lag as before.

Next up: PW injectors...

Ken

PS Thanks guys for your suggestions. I thought about grinding the wrench down - glad to hear it works.

Good Job KMC.

I started to chisel the head off the 'stubborn one' and about half way through found that it turned easy. Nothing like brute force. Bought new bolts from Cummins and they were like $4. 00 each.
