cummins in 71' chev longhorn

4bt In 80 D150 Dodge

That little engine does not hold up well with big tires and freeway speeds, i've destroyed two so far and will have a 4bta powered scout completed some time next spring, i have my fingers crossed as i'm still driving one.

Renew or Not?

I've been kind of sitting back and trying to decide whether or not to renew my CTD subscription. Haven't been on the site for a while and still have not been able to work any further on my Cummins conversion. Just a reminder, It's a FORD crewcab, dually, 4X4... with a warmed over 1st generation. Got to the point of setting the engine and trans (518 with a lockup converter) in the chassis and the motor mounts installed.

Then disaster struck, Momma wanted to do a remodel to the house and add a room. Voila, no more time for the project...

Somebody help me... Push, shove or just plain insult me to get back on the Conversion. I'm not really a Dodge person and had just joined this site because of the Cummins stuff.

To get back on track, I had thought that this section was the Cummins Diesel Conversion thing. It appeared to have gotten off track with other kinds of diesels... Still lots of good information available. My subscription ran out around September, so if this post comes up I'll be surprised. Anyone want to convince me...

P. S. No more Dodges in the driveway or shop.

You probably can't do it.........

It takes a lot out of ya to put a cummins inna furd. You should probably stick to a Powerstroke, they are SO MUCH easier to work on, and cheaper, too. Besides, noone will ever even notice you have a unique truck that sounds like a John Deere on steroids. If I were you, I would go get one of them 300 ford straight sixes and stick in that monster. Now THAT would be the ticket.

(The preceding has been an attempt at reverse psychology, please don't anyone tell backroad I'm messing with his mind :-laf )

Cummins / Chevy

Would like to hear from anyone out there with a Cummins in a Chevy? Want to do a conversion into a crew cab. So could use any help and ideas so I don't make too many mistakes.

!

I saw a Unimog with a 6bt at a lot in orlando me I would love to have a mint M37 with a big cummins in it!or a F650 crew cab or... .

So many wants So little money:{ :{ :{

Hutchew, you're funny... ... .

But the powerstroke (pronounce flowersmoke) was not even an option. The electronics knocked it right of the ballpark from the word go, just like the newer 24 valves.

Just a few more things to do to the house remodel then the weekends SHOULD be free. So..... All of you out there don't go away, more fun to come. I'm doing the swap the hard way.

Hutchew, I don't know if you remember me trying to find out how to use the Ford 205 transfercase with the 518 overdrive Dodge transmission. I almost went for your idea of using the newer Dodge transfer case with the chain drive(the 241?). I took the big step and tore apart both the Ford and the Dodge 205 down to little pieces. All I needed to do was to get the Dodge 205 front driveshaft to come out on the drivers side. I Used all of the gears and shafts from the Dodge unit and put them into the Ford case using the Ford shift rails and forks. Had to modify the front Dodge output housing to fit on the Ford case which basically entailed drilling about a half a dozen new holes in the front of the Ford case. It all worked like a charm and now the Ford 205 with the Dodge gears and shafts bolts to the Dodge 518 perfectly. Just going to have to figure out how to adapter the shifter to the 518 because it also mounts to the wrong side with no mounting bosses available. I guess it's just no mountain for a climber.

As for the sounding like a John Deere on Steroids, you really have no idea. I plan on running the 3" exhaust from the Cummins into a split dual pipe and to my present dual 2 1/2 exhaust. The calulator comes up with somewhere between a 3 1/2 and a 4" single system. Just have to see how it runs.

Thanks for the support and help...

OK, so are you back on track now?

Backroad, don't give up now. We are a dying breed, us knuckleheaded fruitcakes who would even consider doing the things we do just to stick a wimpy, tiny, underpowered motor like the 5. 9 Cummins into an old piece of junk truck. Power to ya, buddy. :)

Hey Backroad, i my need your help in converting a 205c to run a 29 spline input. I understand the 205's behind the t-400's already have the correct input bearing size. Any thoughts?
