LT255/85R16 ?????? Nice and tall - taller than LT 285 x 75R16, not as wide - mostly a benefit I think - and only 8 plys... . also what about the older narrower ones that Ford ran for years the 235/85R16 - they were 10 plys

Most guys do not run them due to their narrow width(being a 7in wide tire). I know guys out here who use them in the snow months because they say they go better in bad weather. I run the 285/75's and can go everywhere they have with no issues. Personally I know the manufacturers say they can be used on a 6-8" wide wheel but with a tread width of 7" I would not be comfortable using them on a 8" wide wheel. This size is also popular with the dually owners..... Andy

That is all I run on my Dually. I am getting mad at the fact that there are LESS options in the 255/85 range. I am at odds with BF goodrich at the moment. Spend 1400 on rubber that was never round from the get go and they bailed on me.

Tool Man,

Sounds similar to my experience with BF Goodrich MT - I couldn't get them balanced properly. They could have been out of round like yours, but I didn't keep them long enough to find out. Requested an immediate exchange and went back to Michelin in stock size.

I've seen reference that Toyo has their M-55 tire in 255/85R16 in E-rated construction. But, I've yet to verify with Toyo. When I'm ready for another set, I'll try to explore this tire - but only if it's E-rated. It may also be an expensive tire, but I'm not close enough to replacement time to negotiate pricing.

Wish there were more choices in this size,

John

Yep John here is the deal,

I bough a full set of MTR's Prior to doing so I got in on the whole Centermatic group purchase here on the TDR. So with a brand new set of centermatics, I wanted a brand new set of rubber. I went and had them mounted, fully balanced so the centermatics did not have to break a sweat.

I go to hop on the highway and man the truch was shakin. I had to wait til the following day as I was the last truck out the door that day. I went back and had them check the fronts as the shimmy was in the wheel. They muck around a bit and I see then slap on a weight on each. I though that was odd because the centermatics should pick up the slack up to 12 Oz. 1 weight sure is not going to do it.

I get on the h-way and same thing. I go back and want Jose and his gang to dismount the rears. the rear right was spot on but the left needed a couple small adjustments.

I once again am the last truck out that day. Driving home I feel it still and am livid.

I have had BFG' Mtr's on everything scince the early 90's as they were mean and cheap then. My chevy used 35x12. 50x15 and those of any of the ones I used you would figure would be a bear to balance. No problems ever! I also had 265/75R16 same thing not a hint.

I go back now P-O'd and ask the manager to get BFG involved. They do and I had an appointment setup at Town Fair later on that week. I get there and the guy has Jose and crew take all 6 off and one by one spin em up on the balancer. They keep pointing to the screen and "No problemo" and I can see from across the bay the tires are EGG SHAPED!! I go over and show them that the tires are not round.

The BFG rep acknowledged this and was having a replacement set sent out for friday. I thanked him and Friday came and I was calling TfT all morning on the status of delivery. Not yet blah blah. Well Friday came and went and phone calls started flying.

Long short is that guy was a fill in from Indiana and was filling in at the NY branch, it was an ill decision on his behalf and shouldn't have been offfered on the spot, and a few other proceedural things.

That summer I went to IRP and had no quams rotating them at the hotel. They have been ok scince then.

That is why I am not getting nor looking at BFG or the MTR "Mould" that they share with kelly, pro comp, and futura.

Yeah, I don't know why more manufacturers don't make this size. It's about perfect if you like a tall tire and don't want to spend to replace the narrow factory wheels... like me. BFG Mud Terrains, Dunlop Dun Rover RVXT, and the Toyo M55 are about it for name brand tires. I've been running the M55s for about 60k miles and they are as fine a truck tire as I've ever known. I think I could get 80k+ out of this set, but I'll probably replace late in the summer or fall this year regardless of mileage. They don't lose pressure (at all) and have never been damaged despite some pretty good off road use. They're heavy and noisy. I balanced mine with beads and I won't do that again. I think the carcasses are just too heavy for the beads to do their thing. I've been told Toyo makes these for the mining industry where there are a bunch of pickups running around on 16" rims on gravel carrying heavy stuff all day everyday. I don't know about that, but I do know it's hard to find a Toyo dealer that stocks the M55. They all try to get you to pay a 'special order fee. ' I bought mine at 1010tires.com, but they don't stock it any more either.

Man I don't know Tim... .

I have ran three sets of Coopers on my truck and had zero issues with them. The latest set are the Discoverer STT's and they have now over 35k and them and are about half worn. I will probably change them before show season this summer and move them to other wheels for next winter but I have had no issues with them.

I think I have 55 k on my current BFG's, no problems and still quite a bit of tread left. I try to stay away from XYZ discount tire and deal with a BFG dealer, you pay more but I've had good luck that way.

I ran the 255's on my 97. I liked the taller tire that filled the wheel well better, but didn't want to go wider. I, too, had a heck of a time getting those things balanced. I had Big O brand (Kelly?) and they ended up replacing 5 or 6 before they could get a decent balance on them. They'd put them on the force balancer, read the results, and send them back. They were so out of whack from the factory that they couldn't legally put them on the truck!

I've been using them for quite some time. I've been getting the Big O's, as they had the best road hazard.

A Big O store told me this week they don't make them anyumore. BIG O still has them on the website, but the awesome road hazard has been stopped. I went through a few sets of Dunlops and Kellys in that size, but preferred the Big O. Made in USA also.

The main reason I stayed with Big O was their replacement warranty on their tires. It was great! If there was tread life left on the tire and you broke it, you got a new tire, no proration. If that's gone, I doubt I'll be getting the Big O's when I need tires on my 06. What is their warranty now?

They tell me three years replacement, and then pro-rated. Probably still better than most though.

I ran a set of these in the Cooper Radial LT... they are an 8-ply, but they are about the best snow tire I have ever ran.

The only downfall is they are a little wallowly...

I had better luck with Dunlop Mud Rovers vs the BFG muds. BFG's get all the ratings for sidewall strength, etc, but in real life use, the dunlops gave better overall service, drivability on road, reliability (never had a tear or puncture, (vs both sets of BFG muds had a flat or two), and life from my past personal experiences.

Now, am pretty satisfied with the "compromise" of the 285/75 BFG all terrains. They seem to last forever and not too wide for snow, rain, etc. They just suck in mud and fling rocks on your paint, but the size seems to work out well on stock wheels, and they are a decent tire.

Seems to me i read that BFG is just a name now because they were bought by another major mfg, just don't rember the details. That is probably why the quality of the muds aren't like they used to be in the days when Ivan the Ironman was king.
