I've overfilled getrag's before by the PTO bolt, parking on side of a hill, etc. How hard is it to get the shifter off to overfill? Does the whole top cover have to come off? Has anyone tried welding a female NPT bung to the top cover to overfill it? I figure I'll make less of a mess if I can actually pour it in.

there is a snapring holding the shifter in there is spring pressure but not to bad. I drilled a hole in the pto cover and welded on a 3/4 pipe 90 higher than the regular fill is on my getrag.

Back a while there was a post from a member who said he could pull the stick quite easily. My luck has not been so good. It always seems to require a third hand and arm growing from my chest. I am sure you will be glad that you installed a fitting to do the job. As you mention you can pull down in a ditch with the driver side low and get a good bit more in the transmission at the regular fill plug. Perhaps more useful would be to have the front of the truck steeply down hill and with the transmission consequently level, you can get enough fluid in it to protect the pocket bearing.

Take the top bolt out of the PTO cover on the transmission. I used a transmission funnel at the driver side wheel well w/some fuelline run to the bolt hole and filled to it w/ Mobile 1. I started to use the shifter, but seemed like too much trouble.

its just a snap ring, have a good set of snap pliers or grind on some larger needle nose, you have to push down on the shifter so there isnt any pressure on the snap ring.

I screwed a pipe elbow in the hole with a short nipple to overfill thru. Then I put a pipe cap on to seal it. (Actually I welded a piece of welding rod in first for a dipstick ;) )
