How hot does your oil temp gauge read unloaded? Mine seldom moves at all so I was thinking of replacing it with an EGT.

My sensor is located right above the oil filter.

Mark,
My sensor is also located above the oil filter and without towing seldom moves to 100 degrees. While pulling a 30ft 5ver it goes just over 100 degrees. Hope this helps.

Oil temp seems to run about 15-20 degrees hotter than the factory water temp gauge. It is much slower to respond, however. I don't think that I've ever seen it exceed 220-degrees. It is a boring gauge but I think that it is good info. I use a switch to toggle between the engine oil and rear end differential temp.

Troy, there is something wrong with your gauge.

Ditto the 10 - 20 above the coolant temps. In very cold temps mine runs 170. Summer it runs 190. Probe in same location above filter.

Cummins said this is a great spot and to never let temps get or stay over 220 very long. I have seen 215 with summertime very hard pulling.

Ditto with David and JJW but not with Troy, after my rig was warmed I never saw temps as low as 100°even in sub zero weather, never higher than 190°in summer. I had the sender on the oil filter housing also, with a switch to my AT temp, but like David said it was boring. I tapped a hole in my intake manifold and moved the sender there. I use it to keep my intake temp between 50°and 90°by opening the winter front and replacing the fan when it climbs with the weather. Of course you will need a gauge that measures that low.

I drive 30 min to work everyday on the interstate and my gauge still doesn't move. I've replaced the sensors 2x and I've tested the gauge so I know it works.

Troy-maybe we should move the sensor?

Putting the sensor in the top of the oil filter is the proper location. I am not sure what type of gauges that you are using, but there is no way that the oil temp will ever run cooler than the water. By any chance did you use teflon tape on the sensor? This could be adding to your resistance thus forcing the gauge to read low. NPT does not require any tape. Good luck,

David

Dresslered-
I did not use any teflon tape on my sensor. My gauge is a Isspro universal temp. gauge. The sensor is the one from Geno's garage.
Any other idea on why it might not be working?

Mark-
Most problems that people have encountered with their gauges has been due to improper grounding. Make sure that all of your connections are clean and "tight. " The temperature gauge is measuring the difference in resistance between the grounding point of the gauge and the engine block (essentially where the sender is mounted). The engine block is a very good ground whereas a metal trim piece (if this is what you have used to ground the gauge to) may not. Anything that adds resistance (other than the sender itself) will decrease the reading on your gauge (which appears to be the problem). If your gauge is reading low, the resistance is most likely higher than normal.

Another real quick test would be to remove the sender and the gauge from your truck. Hook up a little external circuit next to your stove and drop end of the sender in a pot of boiling water. This should read roughly what your oil temp is suppose to (approx 210 degrees). If this test works, at least you will have verified that the sender and gauge are working properly. Good luck,

I think my gauge is grounded to a screw anchor for the dash. I think this might not be a good choice. I'll look to it.

Thanks!

I am also using an ISSPRO guage to monitor oil temp. It takes it's time but eventually gets over 200'. Like other members have said, boring but good info non the less. I like to let my oil temp warm prior to putting a lot of boost into the engine.

Hey Guys,
Guess I need some help here. I am using an ISSPRO gauge and am on my 2nd sending unit. I grounded to the metal frame of the dash(bare metal) where it mounts to the body of the cab. I did use teflon tape because I had a problem with the sender leaking. I had a problem going from the 1/8" npt in the filter housing to 3/8" for the sender. If anyone has a better system please let me know.
Mark let me know what you find out because I am having the same problem.
Thanks guys,
Troy

I'll keep you informed as I find stuff.

Troy-
I had another thought although I am not familiar with the ISSPRO sending unit. My VDO sender is already an 1/8" NPT and it reaches down at least a full inch into the filter housing. It may be that (especially with an adapter) your sender is not emmersed in the flow of the hot oil and thus you are only measuring the temperature of the housing.
