How long does the alternator last?

I've got a 97 w/ 355K on it, original alternator working great!

2004. 5, single cab, 4x4, 6sp, 3. 73, intake mods, no muffler

1997, single cab, 4x4, 355K miles, 5sp

By around 200K miles it started to die. I was a few hours from home when it breathed it's last breath. It was night time and in the middle of winter. I needed lights and heat. Not a good time to be without an alternator. As silly as it is, I carry a small 2-stroke generator with me. It has both 120V (for the block heater) and 12V outputs. I ran the jumper cables from the bed to the batteries and kept driving. I had to refuel the generator once before making it home.

When I tore the generator apart, I found the brushes to be totally worn out, and the contact rings on the rotor were pretty grooved. I replaced the brushes and left everything else alone. I picked up a used spare and rebuilt it. I'm curious to see how long it goes with the rotor slip rings being so worn.

Time will tell.

12 years and 175,000 miles. Diode went out. Lost the PCM at the same time; maybe a good reason to to have them serviced sooner.
