I have a '95 3500, bone stock, 152,000 miles, am considering a 230/605 TST plate but would like to know if I should leave the injectors alone or replace them just due to their age/miles. I don't wanna go nuts with power, (thats what they all say) cause this is my daily driver. Also do any bros out there know what the stock injector numbers are?

They're just becoming a problem that's waiting to happen. R&R them with higher horsepower nozzles. It's a move in the right direction. I generally caution people to replace them at the 100K mark.

I replace mine every year on all 3 trucks. Each one gets 100,000 miles a year on them. Mike

You've got to keep that check book where you can't get to it.
Shame on Chris--He should have said --if you wan't more smoke-power-bragging rights ,more fuel use ,and most of all less cash change them out tommorrow.
You don't need to change injectors unless you have one fail... note'd by miss in eng.
Simple (cheap) way to pinpoint weak inj/cyl
fire up that rig ,run down the road till eng gets up to temp, back to the drive(shade tree) put stick on foot pedal to maintaine aprox 1400 rpm,pop the hood and with a cup of water in hand dip finger into and then dab on to exhaust port of cyl-repeat to other 5 cyl and then see which port stays wet the longest. Now if the first stays wet and the last one has long been dry'ed it is the dead (weak) cyl/inj.
Now is the time to open the check book replace. . Hold it!!!
just to make sure swap # injector with another just to make sure it is not the cyl.
My self i'am past due for 3 sets of injectors- 700k+

Now that sounds like a good old fashioned common sense approach... I LIKE IT! #ad

700,000 wow you gotta be driving 24/7.

I was talking to a friend of mine who works for a towing service. He was driving a C-3500HD with the 6. 5 and it belched black smoke like a pig whenever he was hauling. When he told me it had 375K on it, I asked if they'd replaced the pump or injectors to which the answer was no. I told him that the injectors were probably worn out and needed to be replaced, but I'd call the Chebby dealer to make sure.

I called up one of the dealerships that does a lot of commercial business and asked their service manager what mileage GM recommended for changeout on their pumps and injectors.

"We don't recommend changing pumps or injectors unless they fail. " #ad

I tried not to laugh at him until I hung up the phone. #ad

I do all my own work. I have also seen an injection nozzle hang wide open due to a poorly maintained fuel filtration system. Not too good when one cylinder is not atomizing correctly at the onset of combustion.

First things first---Chevy has a major pump/cam proplem. Don't we just love our tax dollars keep them in bussness(humv) .
Second . . some one missed the test for inj. failure----and common thought-pouring out a pipe full of black smoke!!something wrong.
On some eng's,and it may be inj,pump,turbo----and after you have shelled out the $$$$$$$$$ IT may be you had a fuel hose leak, went to the parts supply got bulk hose and replaced the hose---now you have black smoke And before the leak was found everything was just find. .
WHAT caused the smoke???
The hose ,which looked like a normal hose really had a restrictor built into it to control flow pressure. Cause of heavy black smoke--not inj/turbo/pump.
Question was when do i have to replace inj.
Answer--at time of failure-or- at over haul time. Why at overhaul time? head /valves should be part of rebuild and it is apart.
Fuel system maintance, which most people don't do & cummins installed - water drain on bottom of filter-97 top side. USE it.
Only had one filter shut down the eng on me and it had less than 6000 mi on it and why ? slug of water from a fuel stop where i bought 5 gal of fuel to get to lower priced fuel. the eng shut down before the water in fuel light came on...
Also if you don't have a fuel restriction gauge, white smoke(in mirror), when pedal pressure is applyed - drop 5 mph then maintaine speed -no smoke -push down white smoke again FILTER time. Dirty/used up. .

Tdrmbramr, Sounds like you got it together, to argue with success (750,000 miles) would be stupid!

Mines a '95 3500 5 speed, w/3. 54s in the rearend. Will this be a good tow vehicle stock or should it be toyed with. I'm thinking just get this truck to breathe better, i. e. eliminate cat and put a "better" muffler. I plan on towing a 6-7000 lb TT. Whats your thoughts on my approach?

I have 140,000 on mine. I will replace them the day one decides too start missin. I've heard of them going as far as 300,000 miles plus.

I think if one is keen on fuel filter changes and buys "good" fuel instead of the cheapest fuel, you will get a lot of life out of the stock injectors. (Maybe Im just trying to justify my own practices??)

I have only used Premium Diesel fuel (Cenex Roadmaster XL,... almost 15,000 gallon so far) and I add Stanadyne Performance Formula instead of #1 in the wintertime. Change filters ever 12K (now 18K since switching FS19519).

At 190K, truck starts as soon as I hit the key, no puffs of smoke, as never missed a beat, idles very smooth and consistent. Oil analysis every 6K to watch for leaky injectors among other things.

Maybe one will fail tommorrow, but if they should decide to run another 100K or two (as good as it runs today), what a waste of money.
