98 quad cab... . 479,000+ only mods asre K&N air filter... no major problems starter, clutch fan, radiator because of clutch fan, and on the third NV 4500... they really do suck.

How many of those miles are with the K+N? I hear so much, "K+N is bad for your engine". I wanna have a rebuttle if possible.

1997 2500 crew cab long bed 237000 miles

Standard work. KDP killed, thermostat, hoses, belts, valve adjustment, batterys, starter brushes, oil and filter changes. transmission oil and filter changes. Front end work twice. Running K&N filter since 80,000 miles.

Original other than that.

237000 miles on original engine and auto transmission.

Averages 18. 5 MPG as good as 21 MPG and worst 17 MPG.

The only exception to this was a trip to Oklahoma pulling a tractor on a trailer. The weather was bad, 9 inches of snow and the maximum speed was 25 MPH. I got 11 MPG that trip.

Needs a paint job and interior work but I think I'll keep her.

171,000 Only a K&N

Transmission gets serviced on scheduled and power flushed every 30,000. I always ease up a little on the fuel pedal when lock-up occurs.

I think that if the stock engine is serviced properly you can't do anything to abuse it. The engine is detuned in stock condition. I read somewhere that the 6bt is good for 300 hp 24/7.

Maybe placing transmission in 1st gear at 70mph might break something.

K & N filter question

My 96 3500 just turned 800,000 last month and the speedo is slow by 3%

I replaced the stock air filter at about 250,000 and have been using the K N since. I have my oil changed at Brandons 5 min oil change in Modesto ca where they have a exchange plan and always have a fresh filter waiting.

I am concerned about the turbo and possible runaway as was posted recently on this site and maybe it might be a good ides to replace it with a new one and upgrade. I believe this motor will make a million miles but if the turbo goes it will cancel that belief big time. Stormy

96 with 210K all stock, no mods, no leaks, runs great. 5-speed original trans, 5th gear nut walked off just once (at about 130K). Love it, keepin' it forever. Mike

The last 12 valve I looked had 230,000 on it, KDP halfway out, and the bottom bolt under the solid part of the cam gear was loose (the one you access with a bent wrench through a window in the cam gear). That bolt isn't often loose, nor the one over the oil pump. One truck had the latter one loose, however.

Two trucks.

#1 in my signature has 169,146 miles and the bombs did not happen until I bought it at 125,137 miles. I stuck #6 piston due to an oil bottle foil that found its way to that cooling jet. The truck ran several thousand miles with the cooling jet plugged to my knowledge. The straw that broke the camels back was a 7% grade at 70MPH with a 7000lb u-haul in tow, right east of Bend, OR. At that point in time I had 157,542 miles, I had the engine rebuilt, but they did not have to do anything to pistons 1-5, they looked new. no carbon buildup on anything. they replaced #6 piston, Rod, and took 5 thousandths from bore. All main and rod bearings were replaced, and cam bearings. Other than #6 all bearings showed NO signs of wear, engine was clean with almost zero blow-by. I have put a fuzz under 12k on rebuild and I am just getting it broken in.

#2 is a 97' 2wd 5spd. it shows about 197,000 on the clock. the truck was 100% stock minus Amsoil until 183,198 miles, then the fuel plate got bumped just a little and ground just a little. other than started contacts and fuses the truck has had zero parts put on it. It runs strong and uses no oil. it gets around 17mpg with 4:10 gears. I expect it to last a million, if they still make diesel in 50 years... . lol :D

Both trucks in my sig. Head gsk, water pump, front seal, kdp killed, and timing. 3500 two overflow valves. Mods on the 3500 started at 40,000 miles. 2500 was bought used with 230,000 but not much had been done other than transmission.

94, 153K, AFE intake, 4" Exhaust and I don't know what has been done to the engine but something has. The front plate has some kind of compound for the gasket.

Heh. . . I've added 9600 miles to my '96 since then :)

On the K&N air filter subject, I think that was brought up because of quite a few members who have had problems with them over the years (including myself) letting dirt through. Best thing is to keep a close eye on them, but I think if they're bad they're usually bad out of the box. Mine was preoiled but it was so poor I could wipe all kinds of dust out of the intake tube after 3000 miles. I cleaned & reoiled it and gave it another chance but had the same result. . . it then went in the trash. It was a RE-0880 cone filter.

Many have had good service from K&N filters so obviously there's plenty of good ones out there, but K&N seems to have the most spotty quality record of the major air filter makers. Either they're good or they're not.

96 2500 reg cab all stock... ... ... .....

346,000 miles with all fuel MPG documented since purchase.

Oil... ... ... ..... I have run everything. Slick 50'd twice.

Rotella for some reason gives the best MPG. Amsoil actually

reduced MPG.

Original stock trans with only 2 fluid and filter changes.

I changed out 1 starter and 2 water pumps. Maybe 10 sets

of brakes, 6 set of tires.

I just changed out the leaking valve cover gaskets.

Getting ready to replace fun clutch and KDP.

Maybe I lucked out... ... ... ... ... this is the best truck I have ever owned.
