What do you like better about the 2nd Gen?
What did you like better about the 1st Gen?

The 2nd Gen. rides nicer, even with the camper group and snow plow prep. The 2nd Gen. w/ 3. 54s seems to have a wider powerband and wakes up where my 1990 would begin wheezing. The differences in braking are like night and day... ie 4wheel disk ABS vs disk drum ABS. I know it's not fair to compare an 11 year old truck to a brand new one but the new one has no rattles except the engine, the old one had a rattling interior and T-case.
My 1st Gen. would obliterate my ETH off the line w/ its 4. 10s and slight BOMB. I think the 1st Gen. would grunt harder in low rpm even if it had the same gearing but really runs out of breath in the lower gears at about 2000-2200rpm. My 1990 would get around a high of 23MPG on the highway, my ETH gets 17/18 in mixed driving with 800 miles on the clock. IMO the 1990 has a way stout T-case(np205)all gear vs. the NV241HD which contains chains. I think the 1st. Gen. truck are more unique, not everyboday and their brother has one. The thing I like most about the 1st Gen. trucks is how easy and how much room you have to work on them under the hood.

The only thing I like better about my 99 is the interior and the Qcab.
The 92 had better mileage, better torque, better brakes, better steering, better suspension with a lower gvwr, had real hubs on the front and the paint seems thicker/better.
The comparsion is between a 92, 250, Club Cab, and a 99, 2500, Quad Cab. Both Cummins (da), 5sp, 4x4, 3. 54 lsd, camper packs, tow packs.

IMHO - I wish I had not spent the 17k to turn the Club Cab into a Qcab.

Answer to #1:
Expanded horizons regarding torque/power limits with the '98 12 valve motor, P7100 pump, exhaust, etc.
Ride is improved, interior is roomier (std. cab vs. std. cab)
Dana 80 rear, improved braking.
Answer to #2:
Gear drive transfer case, full unlocking hubs on front axle.
As asked for... just the positives regarding each truck... a '98 to a '92.

Boy oh boy, I nearly started this topic myself... (both trucks are stockers)

On (now dad's) first gen (1989 Reg cab LE auto 4x4 - still on farm) I like:

A) the performance of the 3 speed auto w/ 140K on what has to be original fluid

B) the stout tranfer case

c) the manual hubs

D) the front axle, without a steering stabilizer tantilizingly dangling in front just waiting to take a hit first

E) the relatively tank like sheet metal and accompanying heavier mist of paint (rather than having been wisked through a colorful fog)

F) the leaf sprung front (I like a firmer fide in a truck, and a 4x4 should not wave hello to oncomining mototists)

G) the hood ornament

H) the nice, manually operated, fresh-air floor vents!!!

I) the tiny A-pillars and accompanying quarter windows... their latch is a natural pinky finger rest for hauling hay wagons with your arm resting in the window. I also like the regular side windows -- the older style window sill is more arm rest friendly, and the blistering speed of the power windows

J) the bumpers, constructed of METAL

K) the nice "rain gutter" all the way around the cab

L) the looks

On my truck, in sig (replacing reg cab, 360, auto, 7500 GVW 4X4) I like:

A) the 85 more horses 105 more lbs torque and turbo that is not half asleep

B) the six speed - my first manual and loving it

C) the interior, overall, even though real people can't really sit in back

D) the ride - firm enough to show it isn't a pansey, yet with reduced harsness

E) the rear axle, front is probably fine, but a real Dana 60 w/ manual hubs (aaarrh, aaarrrh, arrrhhhh)

F) the improved unplugged zero degree starting ("nope mister" vs. "OK, fine, ya happy? Look I even use all my cyliders right away, but plug me in next time anyway a$$h*!@. ")

G) the buttery smooth shifting and actual "detents" of the 241 HD t-case shifting

H) fog lights

I) much better brakes

J) the color of fog that it was wisked through in old Mexico

K) the exterior looks overall, but man, the '89 is a classic (although it has developed cancer - rust for all y'all down south)

Over and out, that should do it for now!

jsimpson:

I went from a 92'Dodge CTD 4X4(Reg. Cab)
to my 96'Dodge CTD 4X4(Ext. cab). I agree
with what everyone has already said.
The biggest difference I saw was the
improved ride of the "2nd Gen. " truck
and a more "comforable cab" with the
drink holders etc. Power wise, my old
92' would have "killed" my 96' when
they were both stock. Also, I feel
the auto transmissions are somewhat
improved over the "1st Gen" trucks.

Nobody has mentioned steering or road fatigue! My 89 requires MUCH lower steering effort than my son's 2000. On a long trip, the rock solid feel of my 89 leaves me much less fatigued than the slightly wandering feel of the 2000. Also the 2000 is MUCH quieter inside with windows up than is the 89. I do like his qud cab, but the back seat is too narrow to sleep on when team driving(I'm working on a solution there). I think a late model rear end and brakes might REALLY make my mind up to keep the 89!

I had a 1993 2500. Put lots of miles on it and traded for a 1995 2500. I thought the Mopar boys did there homework. I like the new truck much better than Gen 1 . I now own a 2001 and there is a lot of improvement between the 95 and the 2001.

I had a 91 D250 4x2 3. 54 5 sp, and now have a 95 2500 cc 4x4 4. 10 5 sp. The 92 would run away from the 95 and get better mileage. However, the ride and comfort in the 95 are far superior. Only reason I bought a 95 was that I couldn't find a first gen 4x4 cc 5 sp.

I have read and agree to most of what is posted above.

Below, you can find cheap and easy ways to make your 1st gen as nice as the newer round fender trucks:

-Wear ear plugs.
-Drive only on smooth roads.
-Drive with the E-brake on (to increase fuel mileage and decrease stock power).
-Only look at your truck after dark, or in poor lightling conditions with both eyes squinting.

well... i've had two '92's (2wd) one '93 (4x4}
one '96 (4x4) and finally one '01 (4x4)... all were automatic trans. except the '01. . which is 6sp. All Club Cabs, latest is QC. the 2nd gen wins "hands-down" as far as ride quality, the biggest attraction with the 1st gen trucks is ROOM IN THE ENGINE BAY!!!... IMHO... i'll keep my 2nd gen. . thank you!!... tom
