6.4L Brochure...I'm skeered

fordcummins.com, but...

When I lived in Easton, Pa. in 1955, vehicle safety inspections were every 6 months. I had a new car with just over 1700 miles at the time, and when taking it for inspection at a local private garage certified to carry out state inspections, they pulled one of the front wheels to check wear of the brake linings, when I questioned the need for inspection of linings with just so low milage on a new car, they said being it had an automatic transmission, heavy brake usage compared to stick shift. Most cars I've seen since never would meet Pa's standard for that time, they were very hot on all the glass not just the windshield, and window stickers closely regulated. I thought ever 6 months a little over the top.

NY has anal (did I spell that right? ) inspections, safety and alleged emissions. Safety is brakes (pull 1 wheel), steering ends, glass, wipers, horn, lites, tires, etc. Emissions; is what it came with, it better have, belt on the air pump, hoses hooked up, etc. In the big cities, they sniff the tailpipe and do snap tests on diesels. Here I pay the man and tell him its a diesel, helps that its older too. They scan all the newer than '96 (i think) cars' regi stickers with the computer that talks to Albany, then it tells them to pass it or not. Oh, the check engine lite has to be off also, or no pass!

What's funny is there is NO evidance that

these inspections WORK - I mean the accident rates are no different in states with inspections or not... ... ... seems like there should be - but there isn't any evidence that I could find... .....

I wish we had a safety inspection in NV instead of smog. And smog is only in Clark (Lost Wages) and Washoe (Reno) Counties. Some of the heaps running around here are downright scary. And some of the lifts!! If I got in a head on, the first thing that would hit is his pumpkin on my windshield. I grew up in PA and remember my dad taking the cars in for inspection. There was so much road salt that some of the cars were dinged for corrosion to the point of falling apart. I remember him ALWAYS washing the underside of the cars to get most of that crap off.

Yep IL is bad. I followed a guy on several occasions in an old checy truck that the door would not shut. he drove with the window down and his arm hung over the door to hold it shut.

well, here in indiana we have no inspections. well one, when you first register the car they check your vin number on your dash tag.

I have no problem with inspections here in Texas... I welcome it. The diesels are only $12. 50 a year and are safety only. Gassers in most counties are safety and general emission compliance... IE is the crap still on the car/light truck. The counties around the big cites go on the rollers for true testing, but have to be seven years old before that happens. All gassers with OBD I or II get plugged into for codes. If codes are present they do not get inspected. Any type of check engine or MIL means no inspection. Mandatory liabilty insurance is verified at this time... no insurance... NO inspection... same thing happens when tags are due. . which is every year... no proof of insurance NO tags. Vehicles older than 25 years can apply... and always get antique plates which are good for 4 years and have no state inspection requirement whatsoever. Restrictions apply on the vehicle's use, but there is NO way to enforce it.

We have spot inspections in Ohio. They pull you over and inspect. If it don't pass... ... ... ..... :{

They make up for it with the school buses. They MUST BE PERFECT!!

MA has about maybe the most pain in the ***** annual inspections in the country, and they are anal about it. You lose your registration if you don't have it done now,and it is every year, and the cost is $29 on top of Excise Tax that we get hit with every year. They don't call it Taxachusetts for nothin.

Man - with all the Mexicans in your part of the world - How many of their rigs are NOT LICENSED - due to these restrictions - I mean PROOF OF INSURANCE etc????????

CT has no vehicle saftey inspections, do I think they should? HELL YEAH! there are some real jalopies out there and would make it better for everyone. Make sure there currently insured also, lots+lots of uninsured motorists around these parts, then when they hit you they evade responsibility like girls.

If you bring in a car from out of state it needs to be inspected no matter what the age, or if its older then 25 it gets inspected at time of registration only.

Funny alot of states have annual inspections your bringing it in from and they still make you get an inspection. register a POS 20 y/o toyota all rotted out from in-state and sure no problem heres your plates.

Go figure. .

How many times have you seen a truck on the highway, four people in the cab, with a scoop of sand and cinder blocks and bags of concrete on top of the sand and all this in a half ton truck? :--)

Or the Toyota flat bed with wood pallets stacked on it?

I dont know about the rest of ya, but I wonder how they pass any inspections at all.

New Jersey has an inspection. It's now every 2 years. It was annually.

They dont check smoke on the diesels.

Umm, maybe not on during the inspection, but they have "smoke checks" along the road sometimes...

Been there, done that already...

No, some of us do not know... . and prefer to keep it that way !!!!!!!!

Come live in wonderful New York State! You'll find out in a hurry how anal they are! First off, if losing up to 40% yes, 40 of your salary each week in taxes does not get you hot  (especially when you find out what it is being used for), My truck will not pass my November emissions inspection because I am straight piped. And yet, choppers and other bikes on the roads with mufflers that are much much louder than me can pass because they have a muffler. And even better, there are cars out there with no tread, one headlight, no seatbelts and ahem, no muffler out there that dont pass- because they never even go in for an inspection! You get into the bigger cities, Rochester for example, the cops honestly, are too busy with the states highest per capita homicide rate and rampant drug issues to stop someone for a broken tailight, so little things like an expired inspection dont raise an eyebrow.

Last time I went for a state inspection (PA) I was required to take and pass only the safety inspection; no emissions. Apparently in PA, emissions testing requirements are by county of residence. In Susquehanna county, emissions testing isn't required. Maybe one county over and I would have to do it. I haven't had my CTD inspected yet so I don't know what the requirements will be then...
