I was interested in a rebuild kit from PATC that offered the 48RE planetary gears with an extra pinion gear. My question is how much can the 5 pinion 47RE gears take and is it really worth the extra $1,000.

Hi

What is your transmission doing?

The stock planetary is pretty good but the problem I had was severe flaring going into OD. The over run clutch was bad and i did not think that I would get back to NC from Florida. Blocking out the accumulator solved my problem without a rebuild. I pull a medium travel trailer(26'). Transgo makes a great product.

well my transmission is slipping very bad in all gears except 1st. I was just curios to see if upgrading to 48re 6 pinion planetary gears would be worth the $1,000 extra to do so? I don't PLAN on building a dragster or Puller truck, just a strong everyday driver and tower.

I like their kit, and am probably going to get it. But i was just curios to see what to HP rating was for the 47RE planetary gears.

If you get the extreme rebuild kit, tc, valve body, flex-plate, billet input shaft, and since your's is 4x4 the intermediate and output billets you should be able to hold 600+.

Hah. Looks like you have had a hard time just getting a straight answer.

In my opinion, no, it is not worth $1K. It would be worth it for a lower price. The 5-pinion will be more than enough if you keep the O. E. output shaft.

My rule of thumb is to go with a billet input shaft, and keep the OEM output shaft. 99% of the time the output shaft will let go before the planetary, and the O. D. section is something you can replace without tearing into the trans. Just drop the T-case, and I think it's 5 bolts, remove old O. D. section, bolt in new O. D. section.

Thanks for that info, that does answer my question and saves me alot of money!! Next i'm trying to figuer out if i can buy a OD drum or direct drum from a 48RE through a dealer, cause i think they are bigger and hold an extra clutch or two and will fit on the 47re shafts... . dont know yet though:rolleyes:

I know the factory is the most expensive way to get parts usually. Suncoast makes a billet direct drum which would probably be cost effective if you are talking about buying a new one from the dealer.

Just got my trany back today and will hopefully be up running this weekend. It looks as if it was a factory trany, dont know if was changed by the dealer at some point but who knows. What did happen though is the rear planetary gear and sun gear had worn through its hardening and the teeth were starting to wear. Also the splines on the planetary shell where worn down pretty bad. John (the way cool trany guy) said it was probably from towing pretty hevy loads.

I dont know if all 195K miles were on this trany but if they were than it didn't do too bad. We replaced the 4 pinion rear planetary with the 6 pinion one out of a 48RE. We'll see how the next 200K does to these gears:-laf

Hey Ben, I'm glad to hear that your transmission is back and going in. John is the man when it comes to the internals on these.

Which valve body did you decide on?
