About to install a new Southbend Con OFE in my 6-sp and was wondering what you paid for labor and a flywheel resurface?

Thanks Jared

Is the resurfacing really required if the stock clutch hasn't been abused - only an occasional slipping? I pretty much baby mine, and don't allow it to slip to any great degree, back out of it immediately if I sense slippage. Of course, for only $20 or so, probably good insurance... On my gasser flywheels, if they only had surface glazing, I used a drill motor with a coarse abrasive disc to roughen the surface and eliminate the glaze - always seemed to work just fine...

I've got my ofe sitting in my living room floor. Going to put it in when my stocker won't hold anymore. Just put dd2's in 2 days ago, so far its holding fine with the comp in ez mode.

I was told that the flywheel needs to be ground as smooth and as flat as possible. I'm assuming any shop that does this knows this don't they? Going to do the install myself.

I was quoted $1,500 for an installed OFE. List on the clutch kit is $907, so that would have been almost $600 for the install. And resurfacing the flywheel was $50 extra. I was told that they typically don't resurface the flywheel to "save the customer some money", which incidentally goes against South Bend Clutch's advice. And this was from a diesel pickup performance shop.

The combination of high price and half-fast work was enough to motivate me to do my own install. Spent $50 on a transmission adapter for my floor jack and fed a friend lunch, and had the clutch changed out in a Saturday. Not hard at all, just time consuming.

Oh yeah, and I also had the flywheel turned down 20 thou to remove the heat-hardened spots that the installer would have left there. I could hear the lathe hitting the hot spots, so I wonder what the clutch would have felt like...

Edit:

Since I was typing when you guys were:

Gary, my clutch was never abused. When I put my injectors in I slipped it from the extra power twice and let out immediately both times. It needed the resurfacing. We hit it with the lathe 5 thou at a time until we got under the hard spots. A sander can't do that.

Amillstream, no, they don't necessarily know to resurface the flywheel. Like I said above, this was a well known diesel performance shop and they we're talking me out of the resurfacing.

SBC specifies a ground finish on all flywheels, previously abused or not, and proscribes the use of a lathe for resurfacing.

It's not worth the possibility voiding the warranty on the clutch or causing a drivability issue because a shortcut.

I paid $375 for my install, and $75 for the resurface.

I was one of a few that won a raffle here in Denver but after getting a quote, I found out that I could order from a different supplier and do the install myself for a lot less. So I guess what I'm getting at is check all sources for price quotes because you can really save some money shopping around. Good luck.

Diesel Perf Of Odgen Did my 13" OFE (no flywheel Regrind) for 250 bucks. And they did it in under an hour and a half. It was an amazing thing to watch.

amillstream,

how do you run the comp in ez mode? do you have to disconnect the pump wire? I have dd2s and comp, have to leave the comp off or clutch slips, would like to run it in ez mode till i make a clutch decision.

Boyd, where did you have it done?

Does anyone know if a specialized machine is required to refinish grind a flywheel?

I have a surface grinder and could probably do a flywheel on it though it might take more than one setup.

You don't have to disconnect the pump wire. Running the comp box on level 1 is the same as running an ez. It is quite possible that your clutch isn't holding the 2's and comp in ez mode.

Took my Con FE to the dealer where I bought my truck from and they charges me $242 for the install and $18 to have the flywheel resurfaced. :D
