I was quoted $1,500 for an installed OFE. List on the clutch kit is $907, so that would have been almost $600 for the install. And resurfacing the flywheel was $50 extra. I was told that they typically don't resurface the flywheel to "save the customer some money", which incidentally goes against South Bend Clutch's advice. And this was from a diesel pickup performance shop.
The combination of high price and half-fast work was enough to motivate me to do my own install. Spent $50 on a transmission adapter for my floor jack and fed a friend lunch, and had the clutch changed out in a Saturday. Not hard at all, just time consuming.
Oh yeah, and I also had the flywheel turned down 20 thou to remove the heat-hardened spots that the installer would have left there. I could hear the lathe hitting the hot spots, so I wonder what the clutch would have felt like...
Edit:
Since I was typing when you guys were:
Gary, my clutch was never abused. When I put my injectors in I slipped it from the extra power twice and let out immediately both times. It needed the resurfacing. We hit it with the lathe 5 thou at a time until we got under the hard spots. A sander can't do that.
Amillstream, no, they don't necessarily know to resurface the flywheel. Like I said above, this was a well known diesel performance shop and they we're talking me out of the resurfacing.
