Source Automotive is doing the cam.

Good deal. Robert does awesome work. If Rip offers to let you drive his truck... Don't do it, or you'll end up with twins! Don't ask me how I know... :-laf

As far as how much is too much... For me traction is usually the issue... This is really true when towing. Above about a ~450hp level, even on dry pavement, it's pretty easy to spin tires. If the road is wet (or worse), then ~400 is max. Unless you want to drive in 4x4 all the time. :D It makes people pretty nervous when towing a travel trailer, and the rear tires are smoking when you go past them up Sexton summit. I would like to think I'm smarting now... At a sustained 450hp level I can not get my EGT's to hit 1100*, so that is not an issue. 450hp also gets me ~13. 49's in the 1/4 mile. So for me... towing anything over 450hp is wasted... but it sure is nice to be wasteful! Oo.

Paul

For me, towing with M4's and my PDR35 was a breeze.

I could not bury the go pedal with the trailer in tow and in OD, but it still worked great!

It all depends on how much weight you are talking about. My jetsled, motors and gear aren't all that bad. So you'll have to make your own decision there.

The cam was rthe single best mod I have done to my truck!!

Dave

I have run the cam long enough to pass on some of my results and thoughts. Keep in mind these are just my opinions from what I observed before and after the cam.

Hp

Well this one is fuzzy, because my truck has never seen a dyno. So as an obersvation only I am going to say that there is more power to it from SOP, but not enough to make you go WOW.

If you mash the throttle you have every bit the response, but there seems to be less hit when the turbo lights. It just feels like power comes on a bit more the whole way, if that makes sense. There is not really so much difference that I can say for sure, just a SOP impression.

As far as the turbo lighting sooner, pretty hard for me to dinstinguish that and drive the truck.

EGT

This is most definitely less, and across the board at all power levels. At cruise power I see 50 - 150F reduction. At 60 mph (1800 rpm) closer to 50F and at 70 mph (2100 rpm) closer to 150F. The higher the power level the more the reduction. This is the first thing I noticed when I first drove the truck after installation.

On engine shutdown, the EGT seems to drop to 300F (or below 350F) faster. I have never timed it either way, but just seems to settle down faster.

Boost

The boost pressure has dropped. Across the board I see a 1 - 3 psi drop at any constant power level. If I romp on it I am going to say that I might see as much as 4 psi, but this is really hard to say for sure.

Lift Pump

My next step in the progression will be to have one of Don M's special 12v LP's installed with bigger piping.

Sometimes when you want to see something, miraculously you see it. Take what I say with a grain of salt. A chart recorder would be nice to do some accurate testing. :)

Jim

The new clutch. :)

I had a South Bend Con OFE installed also. One thing that I was very pleased to discover is that the pedal pressure actually seems lighter and every bit as smooth. Other than engaging characteristics, you can't tell it from stock.

The clutch did studder quite a bit at first, but I figured out that was caused by two reasons. First was the new clutch. Second was my driving style.

I had got into the habit of applying no throttle when I released the clutch, just relying on the engine governor. After it was engaged, and I was moving, I would apply the go pedal. I believe this clutch requires more go from the get go, (so says Peter Piper :) ) as it really is smooth if you put a bit more torque on it to start.

The folks at Source Automotive made me promise to put 200 stop and go (city) miles on it before I romped on it. Man that got tough at times.

Jim

Where to go from here?

I got the chance to ride in PaulB's truck and HAH. I'm pretty sure I could take him in my truck (If he was out of diesel :) ) Any way that was allot of fun, and I got a pretty good idea as to what can happen with time, patience and dollars. Paul did one drag start so I got a nice thrill at a great price so no complaints.

I'm leaning towards M4's (or M2's if I chicken out) with a DZ. Twins would be the best, but not on this years budget I'm afraid. Maybe I'll talk to the folks at F1 about a set of M3. 8's.

It was great talking to you, and I'm glad that you like the ride. 4x4 boosted launches are a blast! Oo.

I'm putting in for orders to either Fairchild AFB (Spokane) or McChord (Tacoma) when I finish up in Hawaii (2 yrs)

Good fishing at either place from what I'm told. G/L Hohn with your requests.

it depends on your definition, but it is true.

East siders think an 8" trout is a trophy.

While us wet-siders see some bigger fish. 28 lb Springer on 8lb test out of the boat last week!

Gonna start Sturgeon fishing again real soon. Nothing like getting a big keeper in or catching a 12ft oversize monster!

Dave

Installed the BHAF yesterday, thanks to the TDR crowd for the formula on how to do that. The heat shield got complicated to bend around the Banks Brake actuator. I picked up a very slight turbo whine, but nothing annoying.

Now on to bracing up fuel delivery. :)

A 28 lbs Springer on 8 lbs test? Hats off to that guy. :)

My lake produces trout most commonly in the 3-7 lbs range.
