How much to pull

just recently bought my first new old ctd. I need help on how much I can pull with it. Want to use it to go campng along with taking my 2 quads. Have no idea on how much weight i can pull

or what type of camper would best work. Never pulled anything before beside my quads with my suv. I have a 93 2500 and not sure of any updates to the proformance. I am very green in the

diesel world but I can tell in just this short few months that I am

getting it in the blood. thanks for any input

If you haven't already done so, you might try posting this in the First Gen Forum. Those guys should be able to tell you more than you want to know about your truck! Good luck!

If you tell me what the model of your 1st gen is, I can get info from my manual. Your's should either be a D250 or a W250. The 2500 stuff is for the newer CTDs.

For example, my W250 (W=4x4) has a GVW of 8510 as noted on the driver's side door jam. The GCVW of truck/trailer is 16k. My truck with a full 30 gal fuel load, driver and 5th wheel hitch weighs in at 6450 lbs. Weigh your rig with a full tank and you in it and subtract from 8510. That will be the MAX weight of the camper you would consider. Considering passenger and gear, you see that you cannot legally consider a lot of campers out there. Hope this helps

This equation will tell you how much weight you can legally carry in the bed.

If the GCVW is 16K then subtract the vehicle weight from 16K to get your max. trailer weight

Load it till it won't roll then back off a couple hundred # and you'll still get better milege than a PSD and pull more too

Take max GVW - Max Payload = gets approximation of truck wt



subtract truck wt from Max GCVWR = Wt of largest trailer.



Remember these are RATED capacties.



I would never pull more than rated capacity for a hitch.



never more than 1500#(tongue wt) on a bumper pull, try to keep no more than 2-3K pin weight on a gooseneck or 5er, and make sure the trailer has very good brakes.



I wouldn't put more that 12-14k behind it. That will put you at about 20k GCVW.



Your truck should never look sqautted before a long trip. If you have plenty of suspension travel and you can pull and stop it don't worry about it.



If you look REALLY loaded you will draw attention and then you'll have to worry. Try reading some of the discussions on weights, legality and CDLs. the laws differ from state to state and from there it only gets worse.

Reading the original post it sounds to me as if the intent is to use a slide-in camper and pull a trailer with quads. If this is true, care needs to be taken so that the GVW of the truck (which is a max of 8510 for 1st gens) is not exceeded as well as the GCVW. The weight of a quad-pulling trailer should not be a problem.

Thanks for all the help, still trying to figure out how to you use this

computer stuff and this web site. I contacted a dealer today and

they told me with 3. 54 gears i could total out at 12k does this sound wright or would this be up to how much I could pull besides truck

I have a way to put the quads in the bed and was thinking about

a pull behind camper

The truck I had before this one was a 91. 5 auto W250. I used it to haul a 21 foot travle trailer while I had three motorcycles in the bed. The only issue was overheating when I drove it in the day, it was fine at night though. 91. 5s where the first trucks to get an intercooler, and the across flow radiator, so that wasn't the problem. It was just fine power wise, but like I said, it had a problem staying cool, even after replacing the whole cooling system.
