I know it's over the maufacturer spec. But I gotta haul 2,700lbs about 15 miles. Should I borrow the trailer from my bud or will it be ok in the bed.

It's a bundle of concrete wall blocks. Truck is stock no air bags or overload springs. I got the 19. 5 tires so I am not worried about overloading them just breaking something on the axle or bending the frame

I've hauled 3600# of gravel and even up to 4000# of damp-ish horse dung in the bed of my '98 2500. I drove significantly slower and eased over railroad crossings.

2700# is barely over the limit. As long as the weight is somewhat forward of the axle and you drive with a little extra caution, you'll be fine.

Ive hauled around 2500 Lbs of river rock in my long bed before--no problems. Truck will squat alittle but no issues. FYI--Drive and corner slower--you should be fine.

God bless,

chris

I load mine clear to the top, never had a problem. Just don't put any blocks above the bed sides, unless they are tied, up and around. One panic stop or hard left or right and they will go south.

I had 2400# and only had load 'd' tires - they ran warm. run max air pressure. What load load rating are your tires? If you can shift the load to be as close to the cab will be much better... .

DISCLAMIER: Dont come after me if you break your truck!! That said.....

You should be fine however. I had close to 3000lbs of drywall in the bed from HD to my house. Just go easy and you'll be fine.

Where I get topsoil and gravel from they only load by the scoop (no hey I only need a 1/2 yard) and they heep it in. Last time was about 2500lbs of wet topsoil and it was ok.

+1 on getting the block secured well though, no need to end up with one through the back window (or over the side and through someone elses window!) when grandma infront of you stopps short. See if they can wrap the blocks on the pallet with the heavy duty plastic wrap (kinda like seran wrap) real good and it will keep them together as one unit.

My truck has the tow and camper package so it has overload springs. with the drywall I dont even think that they were touching.

Weight

I've hauled half of an injection mold that weighed 3115 in my 3/4 ton. As far forward as possible it still squats the bed. I have load E tires with 80psi all round. Your truck is not a race car. Pay attention to traffic lights and remember to downshift when slowing. Also when shifting, don't be afraid to run up to 3K rpm. If you try to shift around 2000 you are going to be rudely awakened. If you have an auto run in tow/haul. You will be fine.

If I were to do this everyday I would get a bigger truck. Once every 6-8 months, not a problem.

In the past, when I used to do a lot of retaining walls, I would regularly put 2 tons of 2b gravel in the bed. The bed mounts will break before you need to worry about the frame or springs.

Thanks for the answers guys. I hauled a bundle about 10 years ago but I don't really remember If I used a trailer or the bed.

The biggest problem when hauling a load is STOPPING!! The weight should not be a problem for the pickup if your tires are good and proper aired.

I hauled 2 ton of wood pellets, plus two adults, and regular junk laying around the truck.

Pumps tires up to max. and take it easy on curves.

6400+ pounds of shingles/felt/nails and 3 people, it didn't hamper the rest of the days errands and the brakes handled it surprisingly well

I've go a 2500 camper special, hauled 3700pds of sand in the bed no problem.....

A full pallet of topsoil is hardly a load..... Starting on hills you might even have a excuse to try using first gear... .

My Mule (96-2500) GVW is 8,800 lbs(declared at 9,999 lbs) registration says it weighs 59,000 lbs (dry I take it). So 2,700 should be know problem. I've loaded my Mule down with watermelons many times and never bottomed out (slightly over the top of the boards). The Mexicans who sell water melons at the market over load their trucks all the time (5 to 6 ft high and pulling 20 to 25 ft trailes with 4 to 5 foot sides). One Mex told me the GCVW was 40,000 lbs. on some of them. Probably why they get new trucks every few years.

the new goober at the shop buried the big forklift so after i made him do all of the digging i tossed a car on the back for ballast and yanked it out, probably about 2700# worth of car and the big lift is around 20k wet, i hooked it though the gooseneck bar and let the chain hang off the bed and hooked up short so it pulled down hard on the truck, i don't even think it spun and i was on moist dirt/crushed stone

i didn't have a camera on me so here is shots from the last time someone buried the big lift till the weight and axles were on the ground, bigger heavier ballast car worse stuck lift and pulling on dirt this time

a fun note goober was talking about his ford diesel dually buddy not only couldn't pull it out but he slid around and smacked a car and busted a rear fender :-laf (goober was screwing around on the lift after hours when he is not even allowed to be on it at all and tried to get away with it)

ps i just remembered the boss telling me about our wrecker buddy not getting it out yesterday while i was off either with his dodge 6. 7 powered 5500 rollback, said it was pulling the front wheels off the ground #ad

Thanks for all the replies. It was kinda interesting to see what everybody hauls. I like the car as ballast. Anyway picked up the bundle of blocks today and had about 2 inches of room left between the axle and stops. how many people are running overload springs or airbags. can you add overload springs to a 2500?
