How often should valves be adjusted? I was pretty good at getting them done , but i put it of for a while now. I know some first gen do never do it, and some do it right at 24,000 miles. Need some in put guys;:D

Mine was done at 169,000 miles.

Engine ran well but I did it. Most (former) owners don't wanna be bothered with it, nor do they know how.

Twasn't off by much. Probably was a waste of time but I now know they can run 169K without one and mine is back to the factory specs.

I have seen the DT466 engine run 100K and be off quite a bit.

Take it for what it's worth.

The valve adjustment is done first time at 24,000 and there after every 48,000 miles or every 2000 engine hours. This is from the Cummins Operation and Maintenance Maunual for B series engines. You could do it every 12K but it's not needed.

I do mine about once a year, or around 30K, just because the gaskets seem to start seeping, and need replaced anyway, so why not take a little extra time and do it? Last time I checked Mom's after 50K, they were fine. Just depends on how it runs- if it starts rattling and sucking fuel, gets sluggish, I'd check into it. If it runs and sounds good, leave it.

I agree that ounce it is broke in and the valves seated it doesn't change much. I am anal about maintennace and have made a couple of small adjustments just to be right on, but things seem ok. (140K miles)

If you start playing the Horsepower game and are running high temps it is a whole different game.

More power, more Maintennance.

It is easy to check on the 1st gens on those back cylinders. I don't bother with a barring tool. I just put it in 3rd gear and push the whole truck back to turn the engine over. (another advatage over the automatic:D ). By the time I am done I am about 6 feet farther down the driveway. I am on my second set of o-rings.
