Engine Oil Temp Gauge?

<font color=Blue>Bill K has asked me to help him out by posting this... Hope it helps everyone out.

On 1998 and earlier Dodge rams you can easily go an extra 3 1/2 turns counter clockwise. On 1999 and later Dodge Rams you must use a pressure gauge to adjust pressures and try not to exceed 68psi.

On the 1999 and later Dodge Rams right from the factory some of them came out with 60psi. So the 3 1/2 turns described above does not apply.

To check the transmission line pressure you have to go to the passenger side of the transmission about 1 1/2" above the transmission pan rail there are 3 pressure ports. You want the middle port, this port reads mainline pressure in the drive position only. The maximum pressure you can take a stock vb to is approx 62psi. If you try to go higher than that you may have wide open throttle shift point problems. Each turn counter clockwise on the pressure regulator on a stock vb only is approx 2 - 2 1/2 psi.
See the attached diagram,
For a tool you will need a 3/16th allen wrench that has been modified, the small end of the allen wrench must be cut off so it sticks out only 3/8 " or so past the bend so it can fit between the case and vb.

I apologize for the delay in posting this info. i was having a tough time loading up the picture.

Thanks for posting this info. I will do this to mine, hope it helps. Looking foreward to the meeting. My truck will be there!

Bill,
What kind of gauge is required to check the pressure? OK, what kind of pressure guage? or fitting tho check the port?

A liquid pressure gauge that reads at least to 160, and the fitting on the transmission is 1/8 NPT. You can pick these up at any NAPA. A high pressure hose, too.

The line pressure fitting is the middle one on the pasenger side of the transmission just above the pan. Easy to spot.

Would I be correct to assume that this is applicable to a '93' A518 then?? Are the max pressures also applicable?

BushWakr,

Yes, the pressures are applicable,
the 1991-1993 Dodge rams should also change out their 3-4 accumulator spring to get a slightly firmer shift into 4th.

I noticed that Autozone has fuel pressure gauge for about 35 bucks. Will that work?

Also, Is the pressure checked at idle or at a particular rpm?

Theis is the 1-2 shift? This is only under light throttle? I would like to lower my WOT 1-2 shift. How can I do this?
MIKE

tmacc,

as long as the line is long enough to reach into the cab, make sure its a good quality hose nothing worse than hot oil in the cab.

Mike,
wot shift points are adjusted by the kick down cable. It would be helpful to know just what the wot shift points are .

As a general rule the 1-2 shift is about 100-200rpms earlier than the 2-3shift.

Example, if your 1-2shift under wot is at
2500rpms your 2-3shift is generally around 2600-2700rpms. (12 valve unless you've got a modified pump)

24 valve- 1-2 say 3000rpm,
2-3 say 3100-3200rpms.

If you have to adjust your kickdown cables make sure that you mark your original starting positions. I have had to borrow my wifes pink nail polish to use as a marker.
Use a very bright color so its clearly visible.

I will post the pics as soon as i get a chance.

I'm using the adjustable PM3 and Dunrite TC and shiftkit Installed before all this new info was available. 24V is the flavor!
The PM3 cuts fuel back at 2800 Rpm so I would like the trans to shift there. In level 6 my 1-2 shift is at 3000 and my 2-3 is at 2800 and 3-4 at 3200. Help !!!!!!!!!! At WOT what line pressure should I have at the center port to hold the TC from slipping!!!
THANKS

Guys,
I have discussed this subject with Robert Patton and this is a complicated issue on how to adjust transmission shift points under wide open throttle. Its not as simple as moving the kickdown cable forward or backwards. It will be too long , and requires a great # of phots.

I am volunteering Kat Diesel and Kevin arts when they come up for their install.
Shhh, dont tell them .

There is a lot of variables involved and i am going to lay it out the way i train my guys to do it.

Bill,
I'd like to change the downshift point from 2nd to 1st. I want it to drop into 1st at between 10 and 15mph with light throttle, typically no more than 6# boost. Can it be done easily, or is it not recommended?

Thanx
Bill
