Ok I see the other thread! I am going to change the lube, I have 70K miles and the shifting is almost undrivable. The only lifetime about the lube is the amount of time you will spend trying to shift into gear at 70K miles.

My question is how you do it. I saw threads on how to drain it, so I am set on that. I hope these are not a stupid questions...

How do you fill it?

Do I need any replacement gaskets or sealant?

I did the oil on Saturday, I saw the covers on the side. Draining and cleaning the Magnet seems clear.

Help on this would be great!!!!

NOTICE: Lack of indication of new lube to be used was intentional!

I suggest removing the driver's side PTO cover to drain, muck out the bottom of the case with a lint free cloth. The magnetic strip can only be removed and cleaned from this side of the transmission.

The fill plug takes a 17mm allen to remove. The PTO cover bolts penetrate the case, so the holes and bolts need to be de-greased and coated with sealant to prevent leaks. If you are careful, you should not need a gasket.

There are a few proven alternatives to the OEM lube. Install the one of your choice and all will be well. :)

do just what - Riflesmith said. If you do not have a 17mm hex key, get a bolt with a 17mm head and dubble nut the bolt. Use that as a wrench. For an oil selection, I would suggest Amsoil Series 3000 heavy duty diesel oil, I think it is 5w30. It comes in only 1 weight. get 5 quarts. Fill up the the transmission till you can't get any more in through the fill plug on the drivers side of the transmission. It is just above and to the rear of the PTO cover.

Good Luck

I guess it was a stupid question about the location of the fill plug? I hope it is obvious...

But if you know the answer that would be great if someone would tell me if I need something special to fill it.

It's easy!

Doug, don't sweat it. You can seal the PTO cover with Gasket maker(RTV silicone), put a little on the bolts as they thread all the way through the case. The magnet is laying on the bottom of the case. The fill plug is 17mm(same as a VW transmission wrench). There is enough room get the qt. bottles of lube up high enough to just squeeze them in, no special gizmo required.

Thanks for the input!!! So it is right above the side covers then. Sounds good to me. I am gonna change it this weekend and post back.

Plug is not right above... . Looking from the drivers side, it is located just to the right of the PTO plate approx. midline to the plate.
