Ya, and it will scare the crap out of you the first time it does the auto high idle right from a stone cold start at -25 below. Things really rattle for about 10 seconds. I ducked the first time... ... ..... figured metal was going to be flying by my nose... ... ... .

There is no stopping the automatic high idle. And after six years it does not seem to have harmed the engine... .....

Mike. :)

All Common Rails automatically idle up to 1000rpm when the ECM senses a certain temperature.

The one being discussed here is user-adjustable high idle (or PTO idle) using the cruise control buttons. It's adjustable from 11-1500rpm. There are two different high idles, kinda confusing I know.

1000 rpms seems plenty to warm the engine up quickly.....

In Sunny South Carolina 1000 rpm's is adequate.

However at 10 degree outside air temps and a 1" thick coating of ice on all the truck windows requires 1500rpm and the engine brake on to make heat enough to loosen that mess up... ... ... :-laf

Provided you can pry the driver's door open to start the truck in the first place... . #@$%!

Just like the three cylinder idle on the second gens, first time is an eye opener.

Ya I hear you Mike. . people were running around insane cause it was in the 20s for TWO WHOLE DAYS! It gets really fun if it snows down hear :-laf

you may need to go and have it turned on at the dealer if it's an auto trans. if it is a manual trans don't wast your time. I use an old ice scraper I found in the street and it works perfect!

On an 07. 5-09 6. 7 with a manual, there is a little green wire up behind the pedals that has tape wrapped around the end. All you need to do is add some length of wire to that, ground it, and voila you have the adjustable high idle if it's enabled in the ECM.

2010MY and later automatics have the option enabled from the factory. 2010MY and later manual trans cannot have it enabled, as it isn't in the ECM as an option.

So splice into that little wire and ground it and thats it??

In South Carolina, probably. :-laf

As an example; my 03 cannot have the manual high idle activated, since it isn't a function of the ECM. So, it's limited to the automatic 1000rpm high idle. I could let it sit outside on a near-zero degree morning for 20 minutes and the windshield is barely starting to defrost. And it's still rather cold inside, since the coolant temp doesn't rise enough to move the needle.

On my 07, manual high idle to 1500 and in 10 minutes, all windows are nice and clear and the interior is nice and toasty. :D HUGE difference between warmup times between the two. It will be interesting to see if the exhaust brake on the VNT turbo on the 6. 7 I'm swapping into the 03 will help out on the warmup time...

Yes. As long as it's turned on in the ECM, just ground that wire out somewhere under the dash. If you take it to a dealer to turn it on, don't listen to them if they tell you you need a clutch safety switch or some other BS; ground that wire before you go so you can test it before you leave to be sure it's on.

Cruise on, hit SET twice and it should go up to 1100. Use the ACCEL and DECEL switch on the right hand side to adjust up and down. ;)

The only green wire(S) I can see have a white plug on the end. They are taped up just above the brake pedal not connected to anything. they go up into space do you think this might be it? I was thinking of putting a small switch on those and see if thats going to do it.

Had it enabled at the dealer. . had them do it while doing and oil change. . I get $42 coupons for it. . bargain price. . the fast idle was done in 3 min. . no charge... . Now hit the cruise, and set, the engine goes to 1100. . . . either hitting brake, tap cancel or turn off cruise will disengage... use speed-up and decel. to increase or decrease. works like a charm

$42 is a steal. You'd be hard pressed to do it cheaper yourself unless you bought oil bulk and filters wholesale...

Look at your local dodge dealer and see if they have specials they send online in the form of coupons. . been doing that with my truck since new.

Eric; My dealer changes my oil for me for just $13. 00 and of course I supply the oil and filter. At that price I will gladly let them do it so as not to lay in freezing slush and having all that road debri dripping in my face, hot oil dripping down my arm possibly. Nope, not unless I have to.

Regarding the idle issue:I just keep my truck plugged in at home. My high idle works on its own and it is not controlled by the cruise control button as previously mentioned. It will not work if I had "Sweet Pea" plugged in overnite. Leaving work is a different story.

However, I rarely let my truck idle just to let it kick on and heat up. When leaving work I just get in and drive... keeping RPM's under 2000 for a short period and it warms up really quick especially with the EB switched on. I just make sure I have good oil pressure and take it easy for first few miles and she is just fine. Why waste fuel and time? Just my opinion.
PS: I am still using that homemade winter front you sold me a couple of years ago. Works good! Thanks.

Major,

All ISB6. 7 engines have two fast idle programs. One is controlled by the ECM without driver input based on ambient temp. If you start the truck in very cold weather and allow it to idle a few minutes the ECM will increase idle speed with the exhaust brake feature of the VGT closed for faster warm-up.

The driver can also activate fast idle at any time in any temp by turning on and setting the cruise control then bumping speed up with the ACEL button.

The fast idle feature was maybe still is the PTO feature enabled. Pickups did not have it enabled from the factory as it was assumed there would not be a PTO (cannot put a PTO on a 68rfe). Maybe the newer trucks come PTO enabled now.

That's interesting. I didn't know that all the 6. 7s weren't activated when shipped. My C&C was already activated but you may have a point - my C&C could have a PTO installed after purchase but pickups don't have that capability.

I'm an employee at my local dealer and the email specials they send me are for $89 oil changes.

Wow! These new trucks are awesome! (I don't have one) My Smarty enabled my high idle but that is a cool feature controlling it with the cruise buttons!
