I have a Crown Vic Police Interceptor that does 0-60 mph in 7.5 seconds. How do I figure out how many feet I’ve traveled from 0-62 mph?

Assuming your acceleration is steady, 0 to 60 = 7.5 seconds...

5280' = 1 mile x 10 mph = 52,800' per hour / 3600 seconds = 14.67' * 1.25 seconds (1/6th of 7.5 sec.) = 18.33'
@ 18.33' = 10 mph**
@ 36.67' = 20 mph
@ 55' = 30 mph
@ 73.33' = 40 mph
@ 91.67' = 50 mph
@ 110' = 60 mph

Total 385' in 7.5 seconds

**This is close but, the vehicle doesn't start out at 10mph. I did the math in 10mph increments. You could get closer doing it in 1mph increments.

Thank you! To add a little more to this, the car also has 300 pounds of sand bags in the trunk and the street was layered in water from melting snow. So by your calculations above, it would take a stock unloaded car 385’ to go from 0-60. In your opinion, could this car go from 0-62 mph in stock form with 300 pounds of sand in the trunk in 270’?

The other way to compute distance is to install an accelerometer app on your smart phone. The app should be able to tell you elpased distance at any time. Moving in a straight line should reduce the complexity of the computation.

Took the car out last night and made 10 runs. From a stop, the best I could get it to go was 48 mph in 270’. No where near 62 mph. The reason for 270’ is that’s the distance it is from the stop sign on a 90 degree corner to the next street down where the cop claims he radared our son going 62 mph. We know this area well and knew there’s no way this is possible. We’re just trying to get as much info as possible for our court date coming up.

Based on the little bit of math I did in my calculation, @ 275' showed 50mph.

Just be careful. If you agitate the Judge, it might hurt verses help. I don't know what your son's driving record looks like but, here in NC we have a "Prayer for Judgement" plea. Which means as long as there is no other infractions within a time period going forward, the slate is wiped clean. But, another tickets gets you both. Good Luck!

His record is clean. My son is the worst back seat driver you’d ever ride with. Every car he gets into he points out infractions to the driver. This speeding is just not him. There’s a little more history with this cop. This cop joined the same martial arts gym that my son was in. My son was within a couple months of getting his black belt when this guy joined as a white belt. That made my son(13 years old at the time) one of his instructors and he made it known he did not like it. Our sons name is Trapper. But, there’s another kid in town named Gunner who’s known for causing trouble. This cop has come to our house twice telling us our son Gunner has gotten into trouble again. The first time I blew it off as an accident. The second time I let him have it. Now we’re in this situation. This ticket will be 6 points on his license and possibly a year suspension. We’ll see what happens when he pleads not guilty. Should we contact a lawyer before his first court date? We’ve never been in any kind of situation like this before and we’re kind of lost as to what to do.

Probably was a mistake to let the cop have it. He made a mistake but probably gunners fault not his. If it were me, I would get a lawyer and challenge the radar gun. Did he actually show the reading on the gun to your son ?

Call the District Attorney's and set up an appointment. The DA makes the call before court. See what he/she might offer. I've heard of kids doing tutoring at the library as community service to clear tickets. Six points on a young person's license... insurance premiums would triple.

It probably was a mistake on my part for laying into the cop, but when he came to our house the second time telling us our kid got into trouble again and is a trouble maker, it really pi**ed me off. Our son had been home with us that whole day. No, he did not show our son the radar gun.

I’ll get on this tomorrow.

Hm.......Yeh, I think you have a pretty good case. Have you ever had your son face to face with the cop so the cop can see who he is and maybe not make the mistake next time ?

They were face to face an hour a day three days a week for a year at the gym. When he came to our house the first time he called our son Gunner right to our son. Our son told him, my name is Trapper, not Gunner.

My dad once threw a detective out of our house when I was a kid.
Not physically, just told him to GTFO in a way that made him immediately leave. (BTW I never heard dad curse....ever!)
I didn't have it easy after that. I still live in that town and still to this day and I feel the "vibe".
Trouble with the "zoning officer", permits, cops stopping me for having no front license plate...(Yea....it happened)
Poor detective must have told everyone who would listen.
I aint saying to pay the ticket, just handle carefully maybe.:D

I know everyone says the same thing, “my kid would never do that”. When my kid first got home I didn’t believe him and wasn’t very nice to him. My wife convinced me to go to the spot it happened and check it out. She and I went there together and we could immediately see there was no way he could go that fast in that short of distance. I measured it off, took pictures and videos and documented everything I could. I then made quite a few runs with his car myself to see if I could actually reach that speed in that distance. Not even close. I ate crow and went home and completely apologized to my son. It wasn’t easy, but felt good at the same time. We will be fighting this to the end no matter the cost. I feel this guy has it out for our son. We talked to an attorney today and gave all the info we have. Not getting our hopes up just yet, but he said it looks real good for us and may even turn into a harassment case.

Well, we were troublemakers.:-laf
We earned it I guess......

Edit: Use the tire diameter. Revolutions per mile & go from there.
