Panhandling Techniques

This is like an arm pit. Everyone has one... ... .....

I'm a blacksmith, so these are 2 and 3 pounder cross-peen.

I have been reading on the world wide web all about this subject. I suppose my chief concern would be that stupid wood wedge... ... ... .

When I fit the handle to the hammer, that slot cut in the end is no longer there (closed up). So am I fitting the handle too tight to the hole in the head?

I read that some use an epoxy to help tighten the fit.

Some soak the handle in oil before and after the install.

Try taking a rasp and remove some of the material from the handle that inserts in the hammer head. If the size and shape of the handle is a good fit, just squeeze the handle in a vise near the wedge split and use a hacksaw to cut more material out of the wedge slot. I like to use at least one metal wedge too. Install it just opposite the wood wedge to spread the handle the other direction. If the handle sticks out past the hammer head be sure to cut it off flush before installing the wedges.
