The right way to use OD on/off switch?

Can you tell me the right way how to use the OD on/off switch. under which conditions should it be out and when on? My truck is an auto 4. 10 gears and it goes inOD,if its on at 35MPH,empty. Is it normal? If it acts this way, am I doing no harm to engine and/or trans?I’ve always had hydraulic auto transmissions, none electronically steered.

I've got a stock auto and 4. 10 gears as well. But, I have 285/75r16 tires. When I'm driving around town, I leave the OD off. At 40 MPH, my RPM is 2000. If I leave the OD on, it goes into OD lockup at around 35 MPH. This puts my RPM around 1400 to 1500. I feel this is too low for the transmission (potential slippage) and the engine (lugging. )

I've also has my governor springs adjusted by Piers (not the spring kit however) so I can now rev up to 3200 RPM. With OD off, I can a little over 60 MPH before taching out.

Recommendation? Turn OD off when driving around town, and only use OD when on the freeway when speeds are expected to be 45 MPH or higher.

PS - My wife's family on her mother's side are from Latvia!

do you have to turn it off while moving or can you just push this button after start-up. i don't have my manual handy. i have the 3. something rear end. mine goes into od at about 50 mph.

also, the little lite inside the button is apparently out. how do you get to this lite?

thanks. scott.

You can push the switch at any time moving or not. Better to not push it in at 80+ mph unless you like kissing the windshield.

To get at the switch you need to remove the dash plate, two screws each inside the ashtray and cupholder, it then pops right off. Easiest with steering wheel tilted down. You will then see the screws holding the switch. I'm not sure if the bulbs are replaceable though, if I remember right the unit looks pretty well sealed. There are two bulbs, one that comes on with the dash lights and the other that indicates when OD is off.
