I have had my 99 4x4 5 speed for over a year now. Ever since it was new it seems to make a howling type noise from under the hood.

It is not the clutch or transmission because I can push the clutch in and rev the engine going down the road and it will increase and degrease with the engine rpm.

Does anyone else here this kind of noise? Is it just the nature of the beast? The truck runs fine and gets good fuel mileage.

Does anyone else think this might be the water fitting for the heater?

As another thought, (with your engine off), see if you can turn the engine fan. My old Chevy lost it's fan clutch and always sounded like a commuter plane on takeoff.

I had the whirling (goose sound) which was the heater hose. It would occur around 1500 rpm. If they replace your hose it will sag because of the heat off of the exhaust. So it needs to be supported from above. I used a tie wrap and it has worked fine.

Just pull the heater hose loose from the fitting on the cylinder head. It is next to the valve cover, on the passenger side about halfway down, pointing up. There will be a little plastic sleeve in there. Take it out. It only takes a few minutes and you will spill very little coolant. See if that helps.

It could also be the fan clutch being engaged all the time. Like someone said earlier, be sure it spins free when the engine is not running. With the warmer temps, more fan noise is normal

I had the problem & it was the heater fitting. Only made the noise at around 1700 RPM's. #ad

Just wondering if this howling noise played along with the turbo whine. That is the problem that has just happened to me, with 15000 miles on the truck. Its running great, but the high pitched sound kicks in about 1700 rpm and whines along with the turbo... . just wondering if that to sounds like the heater hose? #ad

Hombre, I just removed the restrictor from my heater hose and I still pick up the howling sound at around 1600 rpm and up. Definitely not turbo related.

Cannonball, use some vice-grips and a rag (so as not to chew up the heater hose). Clamp that sucker off and go for a test run. That will eliminate both the core and the fitting if the noise is still there. If it's gone, get the TSB fitting from Dodge and/or move the fitting to another hole in the head. Good Luck! J.

Cannonball, Mine also only makes the sound under acceleration. Will not do it in park or rolling in neutral. Im probably taking mine to the dealer tommorrow. If I put it in park with the breaks on, and accelerate to 1700-1800 rpm, it makes the whine... . heck, who knows???

Hombre, keep us informed on your results from the dealer. Maybe you can save me a trip. I like going to dealers about as much as to the dentist.
