I have a NV5600. I switched over to Amsoil a while back...

I have noticed that the truck grinds a lot more now when shifting quickly as opposed to the shifting with the Mopar fluid. To me it seems that the oil is so slippery that the synchros do not work as well. When shifting slow all is well, and may be an improvement over stock. I only have about 5k on the fluid, 49k on the truck, and I change all oils at every 15k.

Has anyone else had the same experience?

yep

I had the exact same experience with my '99 NV5600. Put Amsoil in and it became more notchy during shifting. Put the factory stuff back in... returned to normal... . still 'notchy' but normal 'notchy. ' My '04 shifts a little smoother

MIne shifts just fine, but I don't shift it fast! I used the Amsoil "Synthetic Synchromesh Transmission Fluid, 5W-30.

I'm using Amsoil Manual Trans and Transaxle Lube (75W-85?), because it's supposed to be fine in an NV4500 instead of Syntorq. I like the oil except my 3rd gear is notchier than it was before. All other gears are smooth.

Diesel Power- glad to hear that it'll improve, because I was starting to think I should have stuck w/ Syntorq, guess I'll be patient...

I put in whatever the newer fluid is that's rated for the NV5600.

When hustling down the road I am definitely crunching hard between gears.

Hopefully DP is right. If the shifting doesn't improve by the next change interval (60k for me) then I'll switch back to Mopar fluid.

I love the stuff in the axles, though. It made the chatter in the rear end go away when I accelerate from a stop around a turn.

wear pattern??

it will take some time for the amsoil to over come the old wear patturn before it feels best.

I like Amsoil, but it ain't overcomin' no wear pattern.

Hey John I have Amsoil in everything and I've had no ill effect. I cant even tell the difference over what ever was in there before. I have no problem mashing through the gears and dont have to lift off the go pedel until I have to do a slower easier shift into 5th. 5th gear is always a PITA to get into quickely in every NV5600 I have driven.

I swapped to the Amsoil MTL 5w30 at 15k. Differance of night and day in shift quality for the better from the jump street over factory fliud. Don't mistake its still a nosy, clunky transmission but much better with the A stuff in it.

i cant speak for the nv group but amsoil made my g56 come to life. much smoother than mopar fluid. no noisy shift when cold just as smooth in all temps

I used Amsoil in my 05 NV5600 and never noticed any thing different good or bad. Still shifted like a piece of crap, one of the reasons (along with no longer being made and parts are hard to find) I got rid of it.

My trans was still new when it had the factory pennzoil in it, which was stiff and hard to get into gear. Towards 15k I noticed it was getting sloppy so I decided to change it. At 15k I made the switch to amsoil and all is great. I did notice the wear in proccess everyone talked about. I will change at 30k intervals.

When I had mine It always grinded a bit speed shifting. It didn't as bad with the amsoil, but still did. I guess its just a real big trans not intended to be shifted like its a viper!

You should have the 5W-30 MTF in your NV5600 6 speed.

MTF is what's in there.

Like I said, shifting normally is probably an improvement over stock.

But speed shifting is worse. I remember reading all these posts about the NV5600 not shifting well, grinding, can't be speed-shifted, etc. I kept thinking, "gee, I must have gotten a good one, I've never noticed any grinding or notchiness. "

That changed since the Amsoil swap. It makes sense, though, if the oil is indeed more slippery than the factory oil.

I guess it depends on what you want to do. As long as the grinding is not hurting my trans I'll deal with it.

I have 101k on my truck and I've had notchy shifting no matter what I do/use. Factory fluid or syncromesh = notchy

Amsoil = notchy

redline = notchy

con ofe = now harder to get into 1st and reverse

upgraded slave cylinder assembly = no difference, still notchy

I have to put the trans in 1st every time before I shift into reverse or it'll grind

Also, 1st thing in the morning, I have to shift very carefully into 3rd or it'll grind.

At 80k when i changed my clutch, my stock clutch was still in great shape with only minimal wear.

I had similar problems with shifting in to gear at a stop until I replaced my flywheel (and clutch) with a SBC unit with a new pilot bearing--no more problems.

I'm thinking a lot of my shifting problems are clutch/pilot bearing related... this clutch has not been right since day one...

I had bad luck with Royal Purple synchromax... had good luck with redline... got a fill of Amsoil MTF sitting at the house waiting for Fast Coolers... now I'm wondering if I should stick with Redline...

I also have issues in the morning... I think a lot of mine is the fact the engine drops RPMs so quick because it's cold and the transmission is wanting a different input RPM... I found that simply bumping the throttle between shifts helps...

I was having this problem with my 03 as well. Actually mine got so bad that the trans didn't even want to shift. I am talking I had bought a rebuild kit for thge trans it was so bad. I posted this problem about a year ago.

From the feed back I got the consenses was that a bottle mopar antispin differential fluid needed to be added to the mix(the 5600s syncros are like little clutches). The problem cleared up in about 500 miles and we never had anymore problems with the trans. I am thinking that the mopar trans fluid may already have the additives in it that the antispin fluid uses.
