When I did the KDP fix, I pulled the gear off and put it back on , had to fabricate a puller to put on the gear to get it off with heat, then reinstalled it with heat, no problems at all and did not have to remove the cam. Don't know why you would have to buy a new gear. Once it is back on it will not come off unless you take it off.

361,560 miles and still running strong!!!!! don't believe the sig, out of date!!
 
If you do it right the heat and remove works. There have been some reports of problems doing it that way. I don't know why they had problems. If you break a cam gear it does more damage than just needing to replace the gear. Bent push rods and valves because of pistons hitting valves.
