Ok I just have to ask, I purchased a set of preowned hummer wheels/tires and tried to mount them up. Pattern was perfect but inside bore was too small. I toyed with the idea of getting the wheels machined and eventuall gave up and put the tires on the stock wheels. Has anyone else done this switch and how did it work out. Did I have on odd set of wheels or what?

Have you used the search feature on H2 Wheels? I recall reading several weeks ago (maybe longer) about someone who used his router and a carbide bit to route out the bore. It worked for him, and I'm looking for a cheap set of wheels to try it out. If it wasn't on this forum, it may have been one of the other Dodge Diesel forums.

HGreen is correct. The hub opening needs to be enlarged somewhat. I don't recall the exact measurement but I got it off of TDR member YoHoot's website. My local machine shop did it for me for $10 per rim. The outside plastic piece of the stock centercaps also needs to be trimmed about one inch and the ears on the metal clips need to be ground down a little. Very easy process and changed the look of my truck dramatically. Hope this helps. Wolfman

I've been running machined H2 wheels now for several months and like the look and handling. They don't have as much backspacing as the stock rims, so the tires stick out more than stock (I previously ran 315 70 X 17's on stock alloy wheels). On the plus side, the tires no longer rub the control arm at full lock!

I've been running them for two years. Click on my signature, Dodge info to find the link on how to do it.

Thanks for all the replies, I no longer have the Hummer wheels, I tried it with an angle grinder and was soo upset when I let the smoke out of it I just put the tires on my stock wheels. I got the whole set off e-bay. Plain brushed alum wheels and tires go pretty cheap, $280 for the set with 50-80% tread left (tires are about 200 a piece new). I have saved more than that on fuel over the last 15k miles and will probably mount my stock tires back up when these are worn out as my long distance travels are over. PS I scraped the semi maimed wheels for $85. 00. Now I will get to see how much my miledge goes back down, I suspect my truck has fully broken in by now.

Yo Hoot.

Thanks very much for making the Hummer Wheel mod information available. I picked up a set of alloy wheels and a set of chrome wheels recently and your directions helped me communicate with my local machine shop to get them done right. I really enjoyed ALL the great information you have put together on you site. GREAT STUFF !!!

Great write up. I just put some 35" Toyo M/T's on my truck on the stock wheels. I have been thinking about trying to find some H2 Wheels to put them on so that they don't rub the control arms. How wide are the H2 Wheels?

By the way, what do you do for a living? I am a MoldMaker, I build plastic injection molds.

I am a manufacturing engineer at a small company called New Way Air Bearings.

I started out in the late 70's going from machinist to mold and die... got a job at Boeing Helicopters for 10 years and learned CAD than 5-Axis CNC programming on Catia (Cad System). Now I'm dabbling in all the manufactuing engineering side of things. . no more hands on. The fellow in the picture picking his nose is not me. He wasn't even running the machine. I don't work there any more. That was Bodine Tool and Machine in Moorestown NJ.

I now have the Toyos on the H2 rims. They fit perfectly.

Boy, I don't know how anyone got a machine shop to turn that opening for $10 a rim. Everyone I've talked to wants a 2 hour shop rate at $90 per hour to do this for me. I've talked to 8 shops and showed them the photos that Yo Hoot has on his site for reference. The cheapist quote was $160 for the 4 rims. Even then, every single place told me they were quite busy and couldn't get to it for at least two weeks. The shop guys I talked to all said they are working 60 hour weeks, have been for some years and don't expect any slow down. Any damn liberal democrats out there saying that America is going into the toilet better think again. With an economy like this, I dont see how anyone could be on welfare. Any machinists out there looking for a job, or anyone wanting to become a machinist should come to California. You will earn more than a medical doctor anywhere else in the country.

With all that said, does anyone have a contact in Northern California that would charge a fair price for reaming my rims?

thanks!!

I got nearly the same reaction when I asked machine shops as well as no guarantee of fit unless I supplied a spindle/hub. I tried it myself and Quickly realized that the center bore is what aligns the wheel. Tires fit on the stock wheels ok, except for the rub on the control arms at full lock plus they dont stick out as much as the hummer wheels. I would rather have the rub than all the crud getting slung up the side of my truck.

Hi There,

I was wondering are the H2 Wheels a 17X9 or wider, narrower. I have my new Toyos mounted on my factory dodge wheels right now but would like to mount them on a wider rim. I just found a set of H2 Wheels on craigslist for $200.

With them on the H2 Wheels how much further do the tires stick out. Do you have a picture looking straight on at the truck. How about weight ratings, do you think they are rated for enough weight.

Thanks, I think your truck looks great.

Joe

I do not know the weight rating but they come standard on an H2 Hummer that's 8600lb rated and they are 8 lug wheels. I get a little bit of dirt... very little, slung up the sides. I do have mud flaps helping. They are perfect for my tastes.

Here's an older picture...

Is there any rubbing without a lift?

Running a 35x12. 50 BFG Mud Terrrain? Will it rub under full compression?

to what did you mount your hellas? directly to the bumper or a custom bar?

thanks

Carli Suspensions sells the light bar. It is one beefy unit. They have a special running on the old style that mounts where the tow hooks go. You have to lose the tow hooks. I don't care as my plow frame already made me lose the tow hooks.

They have a new design that allows you to keep the tow hooks. Smoking deal on the old style one.

Back to the Hummer wheels...

The can be lugcentric. You don't necessarily have to have a tight fit on the center hole. The nuts are conical. I used to think they were hubcentric but with conical nuts I'm not sure it matters.

With that said you can save yourself time and money by using a HoleHawg drill that runs low rpm and a 4-3/4 hole saw. Yes that's right I'm not crazy... many have done it this way. That size hole saw fits perfectly into the depression. Turn it on slow and it cuts right through. Than you use a die grinder or a RotoZip with a burr cutter or coarse sanding drum and slightly enlarge it evenly to fit without interference.

I followed your write up on the H2 wheel mods for my '03 2500. Everything worked great. I want to thank you for that.

I trimmed the center caps with a slitting saw on a router table.

How do you like the Toyo's compared to your previous tires?

Glad I could help. That's what it's all about.

The Toyos are rough riding. Between the 10 ply side walls and the 80 lb each weight it is noticable. They are top notch tires though. First one on the balancer require zero weights.

Between the Toyos and the other susp mods, DW is gone. I cannot make it DW no matter how hard I try. Oo.
