Thanks, TDR Staff

4500 and 5500 Rams still alive

Powerstroke or Duramax?

I am looking at a 2nd vehicle, a 95 Hummer and was curious if anyone knows if a 5. 9 would fit in there and if it has been done before ?

I think this would be the ultimate off roader... ... ... ... ... ... ... . Kevin

Whitmore- At one time there was a kit car manufacturer that produced a "Bummer" with a Fiberglass body that looked a little too much like the Hummer's... the copywrite Nazi's closed up their shop. I heard the Dodge/Cummins made a GREAT Bummer, and entertained the idea of a conversion project. The May Madness in '00 had some "racing" Hummer rides by the Hall boys. Whatever was done to these beasties, they DID rock and roll!!! Darn things are so wide, all the jeep roads would have three tracks. :D But even the wife was interesed!

What ever happens to the Hummers that don't get crunched by the military? Are they all cut-up for scrap? If a 24v can slide into a civilian unit, a 12v should be a lot cleaner.

The original military spec was for a 12 year life expectincy.

It's been 12 years since they were adopted (hasnt it?) and I havent seen any being auctioned off like the old diesel Chebby blazers you'd see quite often in the past.

I read an article in a military mag once that said they decommission all humvees with a flame wrench into scrap.

Oof. I'm sorry the question was asked. :(

I figured they'd just remove anything like armor(de-mil it), and send it off the the DRMO or something.

Seems like an aweful waste of the taxpayers $$$$ once again. :(

Can you buy them cut in half like you could the M-151? Then weld them back together.

I heard that when the military does not want them the federal agencies have "dibs" like forest service. Most of the time they don't want the maintenance nightmare. When they are retired they are "demilatarized" I am sure AM general had a hand in the procedure to demilatarize the hummer. Bullet resistant floorpans ( oh my god-its a secret design ) and side panels are cut out. Which coincidentally makes the cehicle fall into two pieces. Then the pieces are sold as scrap. The military hummers are sold to the military really cheap 25K$ ???. The military paid for the research and development . AM general would not like it if some of the barely used hummers ended up intact in the civilian world for 2K off of an auction. Cuts into the 105K$$$ each sales of the civilian humvee

Given the fact that even the short 6. 2L has its last 2 cylinders under the firewall and in the doghouse, I can't imagine what would have to be done to make a 5. 9L fit - do you really want to extend the doghouse another foot? The reclining radiator takes up nearly half the engine bay, so moving the engine forward won't help unless you can somehow find a way to get equal cooling with a small radiator mounted in the traditional location.

If you're planning on using the Hummer for off-roading, the 5. 9L won't let you do anything you can't do with the 6. 2L. I've seen more than a few 4-litter armored humvee ambulances stripped of their medical equipment to make room for installation of radios, fire direction computer, map board, etc, to make an artillery battery or platoon fire direction center/command post and the 6. 2L moved them along just fine. Add the camouflage net sitting on the roof, sandbag-lined floor, 3/4T trailer carrying personal gear, 2 4. 2kW generators, fuel cans, water, rations, etc, ad nauseum, and you're probably talking close to 12,000lb being moved cross-country by the lowly 6. 2L - and they were just as mobile as the much larger and much more breakdown-prone M577 tracked command post. I think a 4BT would be a much more practical repower for a Hummer, and you could find 4BTs backed with TH400s in many bread trucks.
