Masculine Moments

X 1000 on that HH, Pennys family is all I really have as far as family. I have a brother and sister but that's a VERY LONG STORY. So spending time and working with and for the dreams of her family is what I want to do. They have been more than I could have ever hoped for. FIL his Pard are in their mid and late 80's and still going strong. Pennys and My friends are here along with our best man and wife at our wedding. SIL and BIL , its going to be a GREAT HUNT.

OH, that's the life..... I'm pretty jealous, so enjoy it!! :D My family is scattered to the wind... . so we adopt the strays!! Lots of military loners running around, blowing crap up... . Kinda fun most of the time. I get tired every once in a while, with all the work and then coming in to a party going on in my shop... . But, they are mostly damn well mannered, and there aren't any that can choke me out... ... ... yet!! Hopefully, I'll be too old and well respected when they catch up!! We all love to hunt, and the time together is often best when no words are spoken... . just a quick noise or gesture to point something out, then the glance and smile at each other. My greatest hope is to teach that to my kids... ... I've sure enjoyed it... . They're my excuse to get back to it!!!

Godspeed skinner!! :D And good luck huntin'!!

Thanks HH we are going to have a good time, with or without the help of the ELK and Deer, we all like to camp and be in God's Cathedral I feel at peace in the hills and having loved ones there makes it so much better.

Take care Everyone, got to run and get some donkeys tended to and a few apples so they know to get ready. Mules are so much smarter than horses they can tell THAT WE ARE HEAD-IN, IN Oo.

Got it Pard!!! Got everyone off to bed and wont get much tonight for me, I get all keyed up and try to have NOT forgotten anything its a long way to the store.

Mules know something is up with all the gear, people pampering them, apples they are just as excited.

Prayer on deck... but you'll be closer than we are!!! :D Enjoy it. I'll darn sure be jealous tomorrow when I have to go to the UPS store and bank... . I'm getting to where I hate going to town... . :eek:BAH!! :eek:HUMBUG!!! (oh, wait, I always hated going to town... . )

BIG, you've sure been around a lot of DUMB horses..... Mine act just like your mules... they know the routine.

"Sure's a bronc peeler, he heaves a big sigh... he only likes wings for to be on the fly... ... "

Came into the world to drop off game and people and load up feed for both human??? and animal and head back out until the 25th maybe the 26th depending on the game taken. I came in today on Sunday because we don't take game on Sunday. Daughter is getting married the 28th somehow I don't think missing that because of hunting is going to be an excuse for me NOT to walk her down the isle. We have done well, the people that I took up for a transmission/drop camp pack-in barter, I found to be a little disturbing, they don't hunt like we do, NOT that they did anything wrong but they shoot at anything legal. There are better heads of game but they don't seen to think that take the old or hurt to cull the herd they don't understand that its kind of a crop like thing leave the next crop coming up for the next few years, besides they lost at least a 100 of meat by not taking the bigger game, each to their own I guess they are out of the mountains now so its just us in our camp. Family that came for the wedding came early to see if they could put some meat in the freezer before the wedding, also picking up some of FIL's friends from when he was a young man.

FIL is into bow hunting, I had noticed every AM when I went to tend to the animals that there was ELK dumplings around the highline. Yesterday went out to the line and noticed that one of our animals had changed, it had ANTLERS!!! Went to the weapon tent got FIL'S bow and took him away from the breakfast table and around the back side of the highline. Sat him in a good spot and got out my mouth cow call and gave it a whine like come here BIG BOY be damned if he didn't  FIL was at full draw and gave another little whine it stopped and FIL's arrow disappeared in its chest, wasn't hard to follow the blood trail, we sat for at least 10 min before we got up to track with every breath the spray of blood was thick. I left the FIL do his thing is was fun to watch a man of 80+ Years bound from blood pool to blood pool he was at least 20 years old again, He found the Elk some 50yards away it looked as thou it just laid down and was trying to figure out what had happen when it gave its life to FIL. He paid his homage of the life that he had taken in order to give life to his family. It was a pretty moving moment for Penny his daughter and I to watch her fathers dream of just one last Elk taken with his Bow instead of a rifle, Pretty tuff to not have a tear in an eye, just being a part of it.

Pastor Bob got his Elk when he went to answer the call of nature, with so many bears around I went with him never want to get caught with your pants down :-laf He was doing his job when he spotted and Elk at 250 yards he asked what do I do now???? Don't rightly know Bob have NEVER even dreamed of this type of scenario before. He said hand me my rifle!!!! so I gave him his 30/06 with 180 grs in it and he waddled out from behind the bushes pants around his ankles and drew a bead on it and dropped it like it was all part of the plan. He said BIG you EVER tell of this your going to wish you hadn't. :-laf

Had a Post on this tread earlier that asked about my Mules. HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU HAVE :-laf my mules were laughed at when I brought them to hunting camp the first time. Native Americans didn't use mules thought to be stupid and stubborn but tasted good on the table. See how smart they are they had people fooled for a long time. My Riding mule is a Registered 1/4 horse cross not a violent bone in her body she rides like a Caddie smooth and not even a sway back and forth. The Boys are Draft Mules, small ones but not to be outdone with hart. They will work as hard as the big boys in the fields but aren't so big that they cant go to the mountains, have to take the other 4 that are a Morgan Horse Cross, low center of gravity and built like a weight lifter but in a midget class into the dead falls to retrieve game that the boys would have a hard time navigating, swap the load to them and that is where they shine, they can haul the mail compared to the others. The wife does most of the field dressing of game and I have taught the boys to help her out, moving an Elk around is hard work so with the aid of Jacob and Earl we can move them around to make the task so must better for us and faster with as many bears around this year time from shot to on the back of the mules has got be as short as possible. Bears know the shot is dinner waiting and come running.

My Ex Boss and friend got his very first animal of any kind the first day riding in to camp, we were loading up the rifles and he said BIG take a look, I said quit looking and take a shot!!! he did with his 7MM mag and dropped it at 375 yards very good for shaking as bad as he was, I told him I sure was glad to be standing behind you or I may have got shot the way the end of the barrel was moving around. :-laf

Lots of game Lots of time left in the season, time to pick up the food new guest's and take my soon to be Son in law on his bachelor party BIG style. Leave all the gals at home to do the gal things for the wedding and let us guys do our thing in the mountains.

I love the stories along with the pictures, and can only imagine how the pastors story will get retold with age.

Brought in 3 Elk and a NICE!!!! Mule Deer, Son got 1 of the Elk and SIL (to be) got 1 Elk and the Mule deer. Other Elk was a friend of FIL's that is a kick in the pants, Jokes non stop.

Son's Elk was a 475 yard shot with a 300 WIN 180 gr Partition

SIL's Elk was a 300 yard shot with a 7mm ? don't remember the slug, the Mule Deer was a 510 yard shot with the same I DONT REMEMBER SLUG.

The other Elk was with a 338 win Mag 200 gr Hornady factory load shot at 240 yards. I have to say that the factory fodder on this animal was impressive. The bullet went thru both shoulders and everything in the middle and stopped just under the skin, haven't weighed it yet but the expansion was picture perfect and looks to have retained most of the weight.

Came in because of the MANY BEARS!!!!!!!!!!! meat hanging in camp was a invitation for disaster, had to have a guard all the time just to much of a chance to take. Gut piles were a bear fight waiting to happen, and could be heard from miles away, so we thought that it was best to take a ride in and get them to the processor and get me a night home, im pretty used up!!! When on trail I heard a shot and then 2 more so it means an Elk was down, my gang was loaded heavy, so someone else will have to stand guard duty tonight :-laf

Even in Northern NM or up in Colorado, I set trip wires when I'm camping with myself. Perimeter markers with bells, flashbangs, or the string poppers. Gotta sleep sometime, and sleeping in a tree is kinda futile with these guys hanging around... ... .

Personally, I don't think the black bears are as bad as these things. But the big bears I think are even worse, though I have very little experience with them.....

OH, and this guy was shot at a few feet with a . 357 pistol.....

I dunno. I guess it's something you're brought up doing. I couldn't imagine being out there by myself- say overnight. I guess the cat is worse than a bear. One of my pasttimes is playing with crazy housecats when I visit people who have 'em. I can't imagine as big as whats in the picture acting the same way. Exactly which cat is that?

That's a good sized Tom(male) mountain lion. It was tracked down in fresh snow, and Anthony literally walked over him, in a crevice along a bluff, only looking down at the last second!! He was staring at him, ears pinned, and then hissed. Anthony had a pistol on him, and shot him in the head pretty quick. He was lucky, as he was only about 6-8ft from him, and the cat was cornered, hiding. Anthony is about 5'4", and the cat's rear feet and legs are still on the ground.

They're not as bad as the brown or grizzly bears, I think. I don't have a lot of experience with them, so I can't say, I'm just going off what people tell me. The Cliff Kitties won't claim a kill like a bear will. A bear will flat out move in and start eating. Black bears, usually smaller, can be beaten off with a broom if they're not too hungry. A little pepper spray, maybe a dog, will run them off. I've been told, bigger bears will eat you as a snack and then start on the hanging meat. They claim it as theirs, and they just don't care. And once they've eaten anything, even a bite, they'll fight you to the end. A guide I used to work with would just shoot 'em if they got within 50yrds of camp. He had huge scars on his back and legs where he'd been mauled in his own tent!!! IIRC, he said he had blood on his pants from the day before, and just went to bed with it. He's the one that made me so paranoid about camping and scrap meat when cooking. Don't throw those out anywhere near your camp. Make a guide or the outfitter haul them off when they leave.

The cats are sneaky. They'll act a little like a housecat, but they're big and deadly, and they know it. Smaller cats, young and inexperienced, won't put up much of a fight. They can't risk getting hurt. But bigger males, especially in their own territories, they'll sneak in at night, raid the meat, and then leave, staying closeby. Just too tempting for 'em. I've had cats get into hanging meat several times. They'll tear down a hanging mulie and drag it off. And I'm talking some big bucks, too!! They'll drag it 1/2 a mile or more, and then bury it in some leaves or brush, saving it for later. I don't have much patience for it. I usually worked too hard to give it away!! You have to have a tag in NM for cats, and you have to be able to identify if they're male or female before you shoot 'em!! Stupid lawmakers. They even frown on landowners removing problem animals that are eating calves and sheep. They tolerate it, but Fish and Game will usually fine first, get sued and give in last.

Anything that eats meat and have claws and fangs is BAD A** In my world, have seen some pretty aggressive black bears they CAN BE!!!! just as ugly when PO'ed the Big Bears just want what ever it is and have the reputation of being the BAD A** and intimidation of their side. I have not seen to very many Cats of the bigger size, Bobcat, lynx ya but the BIG KITTYS are like HH said pretty elusive. We have been seeing more and more sign of Wolves as of late lots of tracks, I make a plaster mold and take it to the Fish and Game they keep track of these things, I have also finally jumped into the 21st Century and got a GPS to mark the spot for the F and G folks to help them keep track of them.

Black Bears are just as tough, the grave and marker was for a camp dog that was out of control with it's job, His job was to let us know that Something was in the camp and get OUT OF THE LINE OF FIRE!!!! He wouldn't back off and the bear was coming to the cook tent and Penny let them BOTH have a few rounds of OO, damn dog was fearless to a fault
