took the HX40 off this morning (1/2 hr) and the shaft isn't broken but the bushings or bearings are worn/toast as I can move the cold side impellers up/down and side to side and they make contact with the housing thus prohibiting any movement at all--scored the the housing a little and wore down the impellers on the cold side a little---getting ready to send it back to Majestic shortly

Talked to Sportbike and he's gotten Holset & Majestic together so hopefully something will happen--I don't think Holset will do anything since Majestic worked on it, but he felt that Majestic should and would--we will see what they say after they get it and tear into it--I ain't holding my breath, but hopefully they've decided to stand behind their warranty and Briar Hopper & I will get something out of it---

Briar Hopper is right that this isn't Sportbike's fault-he just recommended Majestic, but Majestic has started to do something different to the turbos by putting bullets on both sides and I don't think they did that before--Marco does your turbo have any bullets??? This could be the cause or Holset's HX40w quality has taken a turn for the worse--Majestic said they don't clip these things either, so it will be interesting to see what they determine the cause of these things failing and what they intend to do about it.

I'd be a little leary about putting on a Majestic tweaked HX40, if it has the bullets, until this can be figured out---chris

I'm very sorry to hear about all this. Having recently purchased and installed my HX-40, I debated heavily on the Majestic issue. After reading several posts here and talking with Majestic, I decided to go with Holset engineering. Two blown turbos from Majestic in a short period of time sounds very, very suspicious and the responsibility should fall squarely upon their shoulders. I don't blame Holset in the least for their position on this. I sincerely hope that Majestic makes things right here. Good luck.

Wow Chris and Briar that really bites. I'm sorry this had to happen to you guys. As MM mentioned I have one Majestic's prepped turbo's sitting on my bench waiting to be installed. I will definately wait and see now. FWIW I was treated well by Majestic and was impessed by the quality of their machine work, and I will wait and see before I badmouth them. I hope they realize that this is a tight knit group we have here and if they don't treat our own fairly they can kiss goodbye any future business from the TDR.

I have a Majestic prepped turbo on the shelf too. Great #ad

My guess is they needed to go into the center bearing to remove the impeller shaft to balance ect.

Who ever reassembled the bearing housing didn't put it back together correctly. Maybe someone not that familiar with Holset products.

Example, there are 2 inner retaining snap rings for the bearings and 2 outer. They must be installed with the beveled face away from the bearing. Other important parts are the oil slinger, thrust collar and thrust bearing. I'll bet one of these parts didn't get the correct torque value, or was installed improperly.

Just speculation

Thumbed thru the Service Manual to get this info.

I have a Piers prepped HX-40. It was not ****in cheap #ad

Arcticat,
Maybe Majestic will want out turbos back before we mount them to check them out?

I'm definately not in a panic yet. We have had crises like this on the TDR before that sounded FUBAR and ended up OK. I can't say how much I feel for you guys that had a problem with their turbo's. I will call Majestic on Monday and spend as much time on the phone as necessary to get a full understanding of what they did, who did it, and what the reasoning is behind said work. If they want to check out my turbo and see if they can't learn why this is happening to some guys turbos and not others, I will be happy to oblige. I hate this kind of thing, it gives Bombing a bad name. Hang in there Hemi, I'm sure we will make out okay one way or another.

Marco, The bullet(s) they are talking about replaces the 'stock' nut that retains the compressor impeller and turbine wheel. More aerodynamic than a plain old nut.

**** Brandon I figured if Majestic can add a couple of bullets why not me--let's see a 458 win mag with a 500 gr solid should do the trick at about 50 yds--chris

I'm really on the edge of my seat now. Please give us the word as soon as possible. I've had mine, which has the bullets, on for a month now and it is still working fine (knock on wood).

Note to the cause:
When I asked about the bullets I was told there was machining done + the fancy nose cones. Since it was $85 more I asked Robert if the work impacted the reliability of the turbo. He said it will be MORE reliable.

Brian

I'm shipping it back within the hour--I'll let everyone know ASAP, what they say--I do believe that Majestic will not work on anymore HX40's until this is resolved, could be hearsay though--chris

supposed to get there Friday--decided not pay $122 for quicker shipping just in case I get burned---I will try to call them Friday afternoon and see if they got it--if not Monday for sure----chris

Majestic rebuilt and upgraded the KKK K26#6 turbocharger for my Porsche 944, and converted it to a K27 hybrid with the bullet on the exhaust turbine, and clipped the turbine 10 degrees. So far, 2500 miles on the "new" turbo, and everyhing is working great. Faster spool-up, better boost. I'm happy with their machine work.

Sorry to hear about your HX40 woes! As with everything mechanical, things can break. How long did you let the truck idle before you started off? Majestic recommends idling 5 whole minutes before driving on a new turbo, and it's a good idea to pre-lube the bearings with SAE 30 before starting up the first time.

prelubed the frickin thing twice--once before I sacked out and one more time in the morn--fired 'er up and she idled for 5-6 minutes---drove 'er for a week(exactly) and took it easy and then I pushed her a little-boost to 32lbs and she went down faster than a bunch of hookers on a guy with a million bucks fallin' out of his pockets--I've put the stock one back on and it's been in one week--boost up to 40 lbs and no problems---I talked to Majestic today to tell them that they should receive it today and they said they'd call me--we'll see---chris
