I have to agree with Doug's points here. It sounds like he has actually used a winch, and knows what he is talking about.

I've had 3 different winches on my trail rig, and they've all been electric. I've NEVER seen any rock crawling competitor using a hydraulic, since you sometimes need to use your winch when you are upside down.

Oh yeah, the best winch of all time? The warn 8274,

Here's mine;

They are "officially rated for 8K pounds, but I've seen them on plenty of full sizes on the trail. And they are super fast, so using a snatch block doubles it's pulling capability.

Yup, rope. It is now required for all sanctioned rock crawling events. Safety being the biggest factor. The steel rope can cut you in half when it lets go. This particular rope is amsteel blue.

I personally use the 3/8" rope, which is stronger than steel . I have a 10' abrasion gaurd(red) that you can slide along the rope if you would need it. I've rarely been in situations, even in some gnarly rocks, where the rop was moving, it's usually my vehicle.

I used to have the 5/16" on my last winch. Anyway, they weigh 85% less, and allow for an aluminum, or composite fairlead, further lightening the load.

Here's some info on it http://www.samsonrope.com/home/industrial/winch-amsteeblue.cfm?ProdNum=154
