2002 CTD 4X4 Quad 6 speed! NOW WITH PICS!!

Well, after this fiasco my wife was able to make me realize that if I am going to make payments on a vehicle, first time in ten years, it better be what I want! So after the initial dejection last week I started looking again, but the diesel configuration I wanted is quite rare around here. Today, I happened to be browsing Cars.com and found an ad for a dealer close to me for what seemed like the exact thing I was looking for, and at a good price.

Here is the link. I called up about it and the sales manager said the price was wrong and that their internet guy screwed up, but they morally have to honor it until the change takes effect.

So, I went there straight from work and was glad to see that it was still there. My parents met me there for the test drive(very embarrassing for a 31 year old, but my Dad loves buying vehicles) The good thing is that it was just traded in and not cleaned yet so I was able to see how the PO treated it and see if there were any leaks. None.

Anyway, they held tight to the price, but I think it is a really good deal for a great truck. I can pick it up on Wednesday. here are some of the details:

2002 Dodge Ram 2500

$23,000

Mileage 33,375

Engine 5. 9L I6 (HO, I think, can someone confirm??)

Crew Cab/Quad Cab

6speed Manual Transmission

4X4

Green w/ Silver lower

VIN 3B7KF23C42M216197

Does anyone have any input as far as what to look out for? I will be getting gauges soon to keep an eye on the FP, and maybe EGTs, but I am not going to be pushing this thing at all and only tow 7K.

Thanks for all of the help and info from TDR.

I am pretty :)

To id an HO, take a look at the data plate on the side of the timing cover. The bottom line of the data plate gives the advertised hp, 245=HO.

The 8th position of the vin = engine . . the c you have there means it is an HO... . :D Now if I can figure out a way to get one in Calif. without waiting until next year,I'll be as happy as you... . ;)

Zachv, nice truck and good price. I like my 2nd gen better than the 3rd gen, because of the sound and the fact that the 02's were the last year made. I've had zero problems with mine, I think by 02 they worked out all of the bugs. Just keep an eye on the lift pump and drive it. Should last forever. Check out www.dodgeram.org It has information on everything about your truck. It also will interpret your vin and let you know where it was built. Also go to your local Dodge dealer and ask them to print you a build sheet on your truck. They just type in the vin and it prints out everything that is on your truck down to the springs. Good luck and welcome to the TDR.

zachv, The HO only came with the 6sp. My 02 was just in for the lift pump with low pressure. It has 32,800 miles on it. It was in 2 other times for the transmission leaking. Other than that its a great truck. The label on the drivers side quad door will tell you where and when it was built. That seems like a very good price for that truck. Enjoy it and welcome aboard. Yeah, get that AND ask for a service history report and they can pull everything that has been done to it at a dealer.

Congrats on the truck.

And while you're looking at the engine ID (where it specifies HP) copy the engine # because Cummins will want that when/if you get parts from them.

'02

Much as I liked my ol' 97, I think my '02 is a better truck. The HO, even in stock form, pulls like a freight train. The 24 valve engine revs so much more willingly than the 12 did. And I like the 5600 transmission too.

And of course, the quad doors are much nicer for getting groceries and shotguns in and out of too! :)

HOLD THEM TO THAT PRICE! DON'T LET THEM "ADD ACCESORY'S" TO JACK THE PRICE!!

OK, I'm done shouting, but car salesman are !@@#@$#%$^.

Just my opinion of course.

The problem is, when they realize they're gonna loose money, the "EXTRAS" start adding UP!

I don't mean to be a downer, I really hope you enjoy your new truck.

Don't worry, the only thing I let them add was the "body etching" for theft identification. It sounded bogus, but I get a little discount on the insurance with it.

Anyway, I did all of the paper work on Saturday and pick her up on Wednesday and will post pics when I get her home.

We pull a 13,500 lb 36' 5th wheel with our 2002 HO/6-speed. It's never been back to the shop for anything - no problems whatsoever!! (I know, I've probably just jinxed myself. :( ) Still on the original lift pump, and fuel pressure stays over 12 PSIG post-filter even at WOT. Sounds like you got a heck of a deal! :D

Thanks. I am really excited about her.

One question on the gauges. I am really not planning on BOMBing anything for a few years, but am concerned about the transfer pump so I want a gauge. I just saw the post on the Westach dual and liked that. Do I really need EGT and boost gauges if I am leaving it stock and don't plan to tow more than 7K lbs. ?? If I only do one gauge is the pillar mount best or is there another option?

Thanks for all of the help.

If it were me, even if I weren't towing, I'd spring for the boost, EGT and fuel pressure gauges. The info they provide is invaluable for troubleshooting, and they can give you a tipoff that something has changed before you'd even know it otherwise. Besides, you'll find that, if you come back here to diagnose a problem, one of the first things you'll probably be asked is, "What are your boost and EGT running?"

JM2CW.

Rusty

Sold. I will get them all. I just figured if I did not BOMB it then the stock configuration would be sufficient. BTW, do I really need the dual fuel pressure gauge or just one for the feed side of the filter? I know the other shows the condition of the filter, but I plan to maintain the filter ofter.

No, what you're really trying to do is to protect the VP-44 injection pump. Therefore, a single gauge reading post-filter pressure would tip you off that fuel supply pressure has dropped. The only problem is that, without knowing what the pre-filter pressure is, you wouldn't immediately know if the lift pump has failed or if you've just picked up a load of bad fuel and plugged the fuel filter.

Having said that, I recognize that most people only run a single fuel pressure gauge.

Rusty

zachv,

Congratulations!

They're great trucks - and the HO/6speed is a cut above all the rest. If you're like many others here you'll find yourself looking forward to every chance to drive it. When the HO starts up it gives you a little thrill - every time. Gauges for fuel pressure and EGT are as much as necessary whether you bomb or not AND they make the whole driving experience even better. Get them all the first time around because you'll likely do it later anyway and lose the cost of the single or dual pillar mount.

Be careful about boring everyone you know when you get to the point that your truck is all you ever talk about!

Don't get freaked out about the horror stories you'll find here - the majority go long ways with no trouble at all. But watch the fuel pressure and change the liftpump at the first sign of a problem. For real paranoia insurance you could buy a spare injection pump for cheap where Robbyram got one and be able to avoid a high repair figure if that ever goes.

Never be afraid to ask any question in here - you're amongst friends.

may be overkill, but...

Guys:

On my 3500, I run two fuel pressure gauges (pre & post filter), a single EGT gauge w/ double pole/double throw switch to two EGT probes (pre and post turbo), a 60 PSI boost gauge and a backpressure gauge for my exhaust brake.

Do I believe in monitoring my stuff or what? Real critical when GCVW is 26,800 Lbs. Or when when nailing it empty (over 10,100 Lbs). Still waiting since May for EGT gauge for my wife's rig from Geno's.

Good luck on the new rig,

Wiredawg

Yeah, yeah, it's gauges now. Then, it'll have to be a Mega Cannon or a BHAF, (don't forget to loose your silencer ring and muffler). Then, a comp box, injectors, and now you'll need a SB clutch. Oh yeah, bigger exhaust. Now it's stock like everyone else's. :-laf

Succumb to the dark side... ... ... . "It is your destiny!"

Enjoy the new rig.
