How many LP's and VP's from 2001 to date? SNOKING

The only VP failure was in the used truck I bought with 120k, it died at 170k.

I have replaced 2 (total) LP's between 01 and present. Except for the out of the box LP that had a faulty motor, actually had two in a row that had faulty motors.

Why? I dont think lubricity will help the LP saga.

Have you read this: http://www.arb.ca.gov/fuels/gasoline/meeting/2003/022003bosch.pdf yet? Bosch seems to think lubricity is a problem.

Look at page 16 then pg 19 under "lubricity" and see that 80% of US fuel was >460 um. Do you think it has gotten better since ULSD? :-laf

Just trying to build a case in my mind to continue to add 2 cycle oil. My VP went out at 52K, with dead pedal and 216 code. I have never believed in snake oils, however 2 cycle is just a lube. SNOKING

A lone time ago someone recommended a product by "Amalgamated" (?) had to call direct and mention this site. Anyone have that info?

Well said! Couldnt agree more. Beware of Marvel Mystery Oil however, I ran some in my MC and at the next spark plug change, I found white fluffy looking ash on the plugs. Thats bad. Stopped using the MMO and the plugs stopped getting ash covered. That is what made me think of using 2 cycle oil, 99. 9% ash free.

I think the Bosch study points out the biggest problem with US diesel fuel and the biggest cause of VP failures.

Yesterday I put a quart of 2 cycle oil in the tank and topped it off with ULSD, today the truck seems to be running quieter!!! Would be interesting to take some DB readings to valid any reduction in engine noise. SNOKING

I've been running the "ashless" 2 stroke mixer oil sold at Walmart for almost a year now. One quart per tankful. It does quiet down the motor. I alternate every other tankful with Stanadyne Performace additive. My average milage right now on the truck is 22. 3 average which is about 70 percent highway. Fuel pressure at a constant 15-16 psi.

What is your average hwy speeds to get that 22. 3? How about rpm's and gears?

So outboard oil was in the test above at number seven and did fairly well! Price and availability make it an attractive choice. SNOKING

OK> I'm going to jump in here because this is a real issue for me. My first diesel pick up was a 1983 GMC with a 6. 2L wannabe diesel. I drove it for 19 years, sold it with 412,000 miles on it. The person that bought it is still driving it to work at the Geysers geothermal power plants in the Macamayan mountains. It is still using the second injection fuel pump. From the day I bought it new I've been using 4oz MMO for every 10 gallons in every other tank full. In July 2001 I purchased my Dodge cummins turdo diesel engine high out and have been doing the same. About a year ago because of economics I switched to china-mart marine two-cycle oil mix with Power Service grey bottle. I noticed several things immediately. My engine is running much smoother. I am getting better fuel mileage going up into the Macamayan mountains. My engine is quieter. I can feel an increase in power there fore less need to put my foot into it when climbing those 16% to 17% grades. The best mix for my driving application is 16oz two cycle oil, 16oz PS, this seems to be the optimum. I have just turned 88,000 miles. I am on the original LP & VP. The only mods on my truck are 4" exhaust turbo back and BHAF kit. I haven't been adding any additives to my wifes 2005 dually cummins turbo diesel, but after reading the Bosch attachment I am going to start immediately.

Did you note what the study said about MMO? SNOKING

SNOKING,I actually have a 40 footer with twin 671's, gotta love that 2 cycle sound!

As a kid years ago, NOTHING sounded better that a Coast Guard 40 footer with two 6-71's. I think that they did not have mufflers.

Oh yeah, Major Motors designed that engine, later he became a General!

SNOKING

I'll go ahead and speak up for the Biodiesel since it was listed first on the study. Much quieter with less smoke, milage about the same. I love the smell too.

A lot of the other treatments, as I remember, don't mix well with glow plugs as in the fords and chevys, right?

Going back to the BD, would there be any added improvement to add 2-cycle to that?

OK, just added a quart of 2 stroke to my full tank and it definitley quited her down, less smoke too. I can hear my Super B spool up like never before! I am on the 2 stroke oil bandwagon. Anyone heard of negative effects, clogging or such?

the Lubricity additive study definitely confirms my use of B2 bio blend. I have to drive 10 miles one way to get it right now, except when I drive to my parents, when it's on the way anyway.

I use the bio to accomplish this. I have ran it off/on for the past couple years and have LOVED what it has done for me.
REALLY cleaned out my fuel system when I first started using it. But I was ready with extra filters on hand at all times, and a constant eye on fuel pressure.

Funny thing, I am lazy, and there are no places near here to get BD. Closest place is 70 is miles away, and it's B99 (very high quality stuff though, no recycled CRAP with water like a lot of other places have).
I just dump in a few gallons of it, and try not to run too close to empty before filling with normal #2.
I can feel the difference in how it drives and sounds as the concentration of BD gets lower in the tank. I then dump a couple more gallons in the tank and go again for another 1000 or so miles ;)

IF I had a station that sold B20 anywhere near me I would be ALL OVER IT!
I haven't tried the 2 cycle oil though. So I can't compare it. I have been tempted though. One of these days I might do just that.
