I know you guys like your SWB's, but...

Y-Knot buy both: a SB and a LB? I love my LB, but the SB is sure fun to drive.

I was talking about a SWB when I ordered my '04. 5. My wife made it very clear to me that a SWB would be stupid for me, and she doesn't even like trucks. I had a 1978 Jeep J-10 short box. It had a 7' bed. That would be way cool with a 3rd gen quad cab. It would still be 1 foot shorter than a LWB.

LWB 96 was OK. SWB 04 is grrreeaatt. Use the snowmachine trailer for hauling long stuff on that rare occasion. Rest of the time just enjoy the ride in the best truck ever! Doc

I go down a lot of narrow places and get into tight spots where I can just barely get my rig turned around - sometimes jocking back and forth a dozen times - the long bed is to restrictive for my applications.....

Coming from a person who has had both types of trucks LWB and SWB, I can tell you that there are reasons for both.



If I did not have an exact need why I need a LWB. I carry a motorcycle and pull a camper and with a SWB I would have to leave the gate down and I can't pull the camper with the gate down.



Other than that, hauling lumber every so often is not a good enough reason for me to get a LWB.



I have a LWB and to be straight forward, if you live in around a city, they are a pain in the butt. As it is with this LWB. I can no longer get out of the bakery and store parking lot in one shot. I also can't park in my daycare providers driveway, there's not enough room for me to get in an out. SO I need to load my kid in and out on the street.



at least a half dozen times in the last 3 months, I've gone down a dirt road with my truck and couldn't get enough room at the other end to turn around and had to back out, a swb would have been able to make the swing.



If I didn't have a specific reason for a LWB, I would get a SWB in a second. The LWB is alot of truck.

Well, I bought a 3/4 ton truck though I don't really need one at this point in time. If someone made a decent 1/2 ton (like they did up until about 1990) I would have been happy with one of those. A big reason I got the 2500 is because I figure my truck requirements will change over the next few years and I'd much rather have a truck I can grow in to rather than outgrow.

I hear you, but I've also found that with a new truck I'm parking in the back of the lot and uphill from any rolling shopping carts. I've had a few tight drive-thru experiences, but nothing aggravating. I've also had to pull some multi-point reverse turns to get out of dead ends, but it never occured to me that it was a hassle.

I installed bed caps just because of this problem, I have a short bed and I want to keep the paint as nice as possible. If I have lumber to long I will rent from Home Depot to bring it home

If I had it my way mine would have a four foot bed that could extend to 8 feet. Here in Colorado there are too many tight turns once you get off the road.

My grandparents own a lumber yard, and hardware store. I have hauled A LOT of lumber in my day. I used to have a long bed chevy, hauled 14' 6x6's on it when we were building out pole barn. I figured if I have to haul lumber I will use the gooseneck or just have them bring the lumber to me.

That's my solution. Plan B is "acquiring" a trailer to accomodate the "stuff".

If you read all three pages of post's on this issue, about half the folks are not afraid to use there trucks for it's intended purpose. The rest either use a trailer or rent a truck to haul stuff about. The logic used by the latter half raises the question of why they bothered to buy a truck in the first place! Just an observation.

It's probably male type status issue relating to childhood.

I'm happy to use the truck for what it was intended, but let's be honest: The body on trucks today are nothing compared to the truck bodies of yesteryear. Neither is the paint. I used to walk on the fenders and bed rails of my old truck, and have even laid across the hood and roof a few times. It was literally a platform to be used to reach or maneuver a load. Can't do that on a new truck without caving in the sheet metal. I bet a two-year old could punch a permanent dent in there.



Haven't cross-referenced all those posts, but I wonder how many of the folks in the half who are "not afraid to use there trucks for it's intended purpose" have the LWB? From my perspective the SWB is not intended to be used as a hauler or grunge truck--at least in the way the LWB is. I've hauled everything from furniture to metal to lumber and have a few dings and paint chips in my be already, but they are all on the inside walls. I see no reason for the tops of the rails and tailgate to end up in that condition, especially on an 8-month old truck I expect to keep for up to 10 years.

Get a good liner (I prefer sprayed in) and I don't have problem using my SWB "as a truck". I may not hurl cinder blocks or logs into the back without taking some care not to cause dents, but that's about it.





Oh, and you generaly want a truck to tow a trailer anyway (if you go that route), cars look pretty silly doing so.

SWB with 8' bed... . It's called a "regular cab". I don't need no stinkin' back seat. And it fits in the garage.



For me, I need the 8' bed more than I need the back seat.
