I read all these posts over the years, and i just dont understand why you guys have so much trouble. My truck is a 24 valve with mild mod's and this truck runs great!! I just change the fluids and drive the $#it out of it. Maybe i just got a good one i dont know. Never replaced a lift pump,i tow all the time and never had the auto transmission miss a beat. The only thing i can think of is i have amsoil fluids thru-out the whole drive line?Well i will keep driving and keep reading the posts and consider myself lucky. Buy the way i have 90,000 miles on my baby and i love her like the day she was born. :D

I have 81k on mine and only had to change the lift pump. I am even still in the same brake pads. :--)

I have 75K and have the same experience. The lift pump is well within specs. Beside Mods, all I've ever done is change the fluids and a valve adjustment at 50K.

BTW- I replaced my 3. 54's with 4. 10's at 50 K for better towing. The gear set is in very good shape. If anyone is interested, let me know.

I Have 1800 miles on mine and have changed the oil once and and put in fuel.

Who knows what the future holds!!

I think you are exactly right. You can get paranoid reading the TDR :( I have a friend that bought a 2000 a couple of years ago and just drives the crap out of it. He has the oil changed at Wally world every 7000 to 9000 miles. I saw his motor a couple of months ago and it looked like one big chunk of dirt. He would not know if his lift pump failed unless his truck quit running. It just keeps on running and he is not at all interested in knowing why

Cleaner;

I think you and I are the norm; I am right near 50K miles and have yet to hear my first "hic-up" from my truck.

Anything made by man will likely fall a little short of perfect. I can not remember how many parts are in one of our trucks, but its thousands. If a product is 99 percent perfect, in a thousand parts that still leaves several things wrong. Most of us have few problems------of course when one is having problems, it is a little hard to be real philosophical about it, and being upset is natural, but-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some seem to love to yell about POS this and POS that and make a big fuss about their problem, but I am satisfied that for the most part our trucks are better than we could really expect.

I have near 200K total miles on CTDs now and am well satisfied.

Dealer Problems

I have 68K and other than DC and dealer problems (several) the truck has been very good.

Dealer put on wrong over sized tires. Less than 15,000 miles and 4 flats, two in one day.

Out of round steel wheels -- DC

Oil filter leaks after each oil change -- Dealer

Auto transmission case leaks after oil change. Dealer changed seal twice, couldn't do it right the first time.

Front and rear pumpkins leaked after oil change. Took twice to get it right.

I had problems starting -- told the dealer it was the injection pump. They said the injection pump was good, but it was a bad lift pump, fixed it. Two days later it was towed to the dealer for a bad injection pump -- at 36,000 miles. I again asked and the kool service writer said they just routinely change the lift pump hoping it was the problem becasue the injection pump is so expensive to replace:mad:

At last dealer oil change asked to make sure filter was on tight. . . See my post "Blew an Oil Gasket too" at bottom of page https://www.turbodieselregister.com...age=15&highlight=oil gasket leak&pagenumber=4

I had "Big O" turn the rotors and put on heavy duty pads at 20K and just replaced them at 60K.

Other than Amsoil all around, the thing keeps drinking diesel a few times a month... . it does not use one drop of oil :) and gets about 16 mpg in town per computer and 19 to 24 mpg highway depending on the speed and agressive driving.

Needless to say I don't go there anymore and we will buy a 2003 from another dealer.

98,000 miles and ... ... .

Rear Axle seals,front hubs,tail shaft seal twice,two sets of u-joints,batteries,track bar,tie rods,shocks,ball joints,front brakes twice,front rotors.

Needs... ... ...

Steering stabilizer, control arm bushings, steering column, shocks,

Also... ... . DTT, Injectors. :(

And has never towed anything heavier than a two place snowmobile trailer:confused:

This is slightly of the subject but I think it still applies:

I just passed the $10,000+ mark today in repairs to my 1984 Volvo 240 DL SW with a timing belt replacement at 175K. The shop owner was very happy that I have only spent an average of $500 per year! So I guess the point is: If you TDR owner's are spending only an average of $500 per year on repairs, or less... quit complaining!!! :)

Based on your sig you plow with this truck??? Isn't that kinda hard on them??

My 97 with 72,000 miles has been to dealer once, for the throttle linkage recall.

I have replaced brake shoes/linings myself. I replaced the exhaust manifold gaskets. I tabbed the KDP. I call this maintenance not failure.

I have had self inflicted transmission work done by Bill at DTT.
