Bug Out

I'm going to buy a set of tires in the next week. I have found decent deals on the 10 ply 285/70-17 from Nitto, $220 ea, cooper $201 ea or Bridgestone Dueler For less then $200 ea.

I have always bought Transforce Firestones on all my duallys, but I have the SRW 2500 now.

I have heard good things about Nitto Terra Grappler and REALLY like the design. The Cooper has aggressive treads too but not like the Nittos. The Bridgestones are similar to coopers.

My question is to those of you that have had experience with the above tires, tell my your thoughts, tire noise, traction, wear, etc with the 10 ply (3750lbs max 80 psi) with a load, empty etc. Its a $1000 purchase but a year or two rolling with them.

Thanks in advance for your input.

I had 285/70r17 terra grapplers on my truck when I bought it. Tread wear was ok. I like the looks of the cooper at3 way better. The nittos did great on pavement, but really disappointed in the dirt.

My truck came new with Firestone Transforce and they seem to be doing a good job! BUT!!!!! The only tire I buy is MICHELIN!!!!! I have had nothing but Super luck with them.

You get what you pay for! JMO!

I have had two sets of Michelin go 100k plus on a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4!

I'm running 285/75/17 Tera Grapplers. Main reason I ended up going with them was due to the limited availability in this particular size. I'm actually impressed with the way they handle in the snow. We had record snowfalls and low temps here this winter and of all the mornings running to work at 4am before the plows were out in full force I never had to grab the 4wheel drive lever. I live in a very rural area so it's not uncommon to see 4+ inches on the main roads and worse yet on the secondary. Only a few times when I was on the lease roads or back in the fields have I needed 4 dig. I only had a few opportunities to run them in the mud and I would say they are OK but not great. Kind of hard to compare because I've run mostly MT tires before hand, but I will say they are one of the better A/T tires I've had experience with.
Only have about 10k miles on them so don't have any valid reports on wear but so far so good.

I have long been a fan of Cooper tires but have had bad experiences with both sets I've ran on my truck. Very poor wear, and had horrible time getting 2. Of them balanced. I went round and round and eventually got them replaced but even the replacements took a lot of weights to balance out. I've had Coopers on compact trucks and a set on the wife's car and they have been great.

I have the Nitto Terra Grappler 285/75's. They have been an ok tire. Adequate in snow. Marginal in mud. Little noise on pavement. I'm disappointed in the wear compared to my previous BFG AT/KO's. I'm at 27k and they might get me to 30k. My BFG's would get 50 to 55k. I do tow from 5k to 14k trailers a few times a month. As soon as these are done, I'm going back to the BFG's. Michelins were great on my '01, but they don't offer a semi-aggressive tread that I need.

Bug out, when I had my 03 i ran alot of tires, my last set were a excellent tire, they were the Bridgestone Revo"s.I'm in Tucson and head up to showlow alot so they performed well in the pavement ,snow and dirt. They were a very quiet tire and wore great,i got 63k miles out of them and that is towing quit a bit.

I had just bought a set of the Coopers ATP (got them from www.discounttiredirect.com, I highly recommend them) before I got the 19.5s that I have on now. I LOVED the way the Coopers rode, so smooth. At 80 it just cruzed so nice. Almost mis them now.:( I didn't have them long enough to tell what mileage was. And don't know either how they would do in mud or snow, but I think they would have done great. Before that I had run a set of the BFG Rugged Trail. Got around 38k miles outa them. Most of the miles I put on is just the empty truck, occasionally hooked to a small trailer or with about a ton of tools on the back.

I ran BFG similar to original on my 2004 with 17" wheels. Check the weight rating of your wheels--a heavier rated tire might not be worth it if the wheels are rated 3200 lb.

I wound up with the Nittos by default. I had choosen the Coopers for price and a rebate. The tire guy at Discount said "oh yeah, Coopers in 285/70-17" are rated at 3750 per tire. I'm happy, plus I get a trade in value on my 1/2 worn Firestone tires.............I drop the truck off and get a call about 4pm, "your trucks ready". Go to tire shop and ask the sales guy, "ok, these are the 126R rated tire 3750@80 psi etc". Oh yeah...... Lets go check and I'll show you. ( we went into the back storage room the day before and he said, yep we got them right here-Coopers in the weight I needed.)

We go out to the RAM and he points to the tire pressure/weight single load on the sidewall and it says, 3195lbs at 80 PSI..Mind you, all 5 tires(spare too) have been swapped out, mounted balanced etc..... He looks at me with the sheepish look and says, "I could have sworn they said 3750 yesterday"......

Now we take a quick jog to the back room again and the coops are all listed at 3195. Now 4 Nittos are sitting there on the storage rack looking like they want to go for a ride. Oh well, that kinda what I was shooting for in the first place, but Coopers beat them out by $25 a tire plus $80 rebate. Oh well, had the 4 mounted and number 5 will be in tuesday/wednesday. Love the look of them.

He says, "ok, come back in 45 minutes and we will have them done,.Sure enough, 30 minutes later they call and I'm rolling on Nitto's.

jgillott, when I was at Firestone, the salesmen said he had Bridgestones in e-rated 10 ply @ 3750lbs but did not mention firestones at all.
