Greetings.
I have been out of the world for a long while, and I’ve lost track of what is going on in the 2nd gen products.
Finally after 6 years of bustin’ my hump, I have the money to do the final (yeah right) upgrades to my truck. My budget is about $3. 5k
What I’ve got;
2002 High output 6 speed dually @ 77k miles
80hp injectors (extruded/honed)
FASS
Snow Performance Stage 2 Water/Meth injection with 2 nozzles
Edge Comp
Boost, EGT, Fuel Pressure Gauges
US Gear exhaust brake
South Bend clutch (500 hp)
Stock exhaust manifold
Stock turbo
Stock exhaust
What I am definitely getting;
Edge Jammer 100hp injectors
4” exhaust (yes, still stock exhaust)
Turbo upgrade
3pc exhaust manifold
What I need your help with (preferably from those in Colorado, or experience with high altitude driving/hauling/towing) is advice on what turbo to get.
Obviously my truck does not do much driving. 80% putting around town. The other 20% I make trips from Denver into the mountains and haul either firewood, or a full load of rock, occasionally a trailer. These are the extremes that I need to make sure I am good for.
My last dyno put my truck at just about 400hp and 900lb tq. That was with an Edge EZ (the Edge Comp is my only upgrade since then).
I need advice on a turbo and a vendor. A small set of twins are not out of the question, but I’d rather stick with a single that will give me the quick spooling and keep the boost up and EGT’s down when running up the mountain passes.
I was looking at the Hybrid turbos from HTT, but I think that I am beyond the HP limits for those (that and the price has gone up $500 in the last 4 years). Super 40s are hard to find. The last time I was involved in this, Hybrids were the way to go, and ATS was the devil (although I do like the concept of the Aurora turbo). My last experience with Garret Trubos are that they are fragile and prone to failures (at least on the Fords), and that was 4 years ago. Borg Warner / Spritzer, I know nothing of.
A vendor recommendation that will have the Turbo, Injectors, Manifold and Exhaust so I can get a package deal, or at least limit the shipping to one vendor.
So, let’s hear it. Who makes the best turbo for my needs?
If (and I do mean IF) I opt for a small set of twins, I am keeping the max boost down to 40ish, I am not taking that step of studs and head work. What are my options there?
Please, lets not let this get into a vendor/brand bashing thread. I need some help from you all, and do not want this thread closed for things getting out of control.
