I thought I'd be real intelligent (here in the swamp, that just dont fly- Murphy and God both get in the way of that) and get pilot bearings for my 2 pickups, since I'll have the transmission out of them to replace broken and worn components. It'd be a good upgrade for the pickup i intend to keep, and a good selling point for the 90. WRONG!!!!! I should have known, OEM is the top of the line around these parts, anything aftermarket is substandard, crappy, bad, etc, etc. This is the first place I had heard aftermarket used in a BAD way. I cant find a machine shop in the Cape Girardeau phone book to even bore out the flywheel to take the bearings. This is soooo aggravating. Does anyone know of a machine shop relatively close by (like, less than 150mi from Cape Girardeau) that can do something as simple as boring out a flywheel? I thought that would be something pretty standard, but guess I was wrong.

Still hate the swamp, Still hate the swamp... ... ..... #@$%! #@$%! #@$%!

As I have mentioned, we are losing the infrastructure as well as the people to do these jobs. About the only thing anyone can do is get the machinery and the skill to do this sort of thing for oneself. I have.

I know a guy who is trying to sell a crankshaft grinder. He can't give it away. Automotive machine shop equipment is going for pennys on the dollar.

Don't blame the swamp, blame the guy who moved there! :-laf

Put the flywheel back in, start the truck and go to town with a die grinder. I just put the stock back in mine, clutch also. Of course, I didn't know about TDR or BOMBing then. I just make sure not to sit with my foot on the clutch for too long. The original had 189k on it, I only changed it because I did the rear main and I was there. Good luck on a machine shop

I asked a diesel equipment repair shop who also did large scale machining. They told me that the flywheel and bearing were too small for them but they knew a small job shop that they worked with. "Tell old Leroy we sent you and he'll treat you right. " Leroy did as I was visiting the city 2 hours away with my stuff in hand. I dropped it off with Leroy and picked it up three hours and $50 later. We also had a fun discussion about Cummins diesels and thermally cracking used motor oil to make diesel fuel on the cheap.

Fun discussion, good machine work, and yes James he was an older machinist not too far from retirement. Makes one nervous about the infrastructure.

Anyway, see if you can find a company that rebuilds construction or farm equipment and see if they can give you a line on a small job machinist.

Maybe its just the area in which you all live. Northern Ohio but be a speed shop in it'self. Our local machine shop is booked solid with crank grindings/high perf diesels etc. etc.

Most everyone and his brother has a diesel pulling tractor. Can't thow a stone and not hit one. Some shops here build the cylinder head from a chunck of aluminum or steel.

I know, I know. I'm normally the person I blame first- it's easier that way, and no one gets defensive.

I'm going to try a few other machine shops around here, and then Selvedge Precision Machine in Poplar Bluff. I am reasonably sure he can do it, I just dont really want the drive or to wait any longer.

Most of those guys love little cash jobs... I wouldn't think you'd have much trouble getting the job done.

According to this website I found, these guys in Cape can do most anything. Did you try them?

http://www.erlbachergear.com/

... and here's the listing from machineshop.com for Cape:

Dohogne Precision Metals 20 N Frederick Street Cape Girardeau MO (573) 334-8987

Erlbacher Gear & Machine Works 425 Good Hope Street Cape Girardeau MO (573) 334-4040

Faust Machine Company 1200 SW End Boulevard Cape Girardeau MO 573 335-8470

General Machine & Supply 2100 Rust Avenue Cape Girardeau MO (573) 335-9087

Metal Cutters 803 Enterprise Street Cape Girardeau MO (573) 339-0535

Southeast Missouri Machine Co. 1212 S Kingshighway Street Cape Girardeau MO (573) 334-3828

Hope it helps.

Regards, DBF

DBF- I called all those listed, plus about half a dozen more. None of them wanted to do it. I ran the flywheel down to Poplar Bluff and had SPM do it. CHarged $100, but he also had to cut a lot off the flywheel to get past where it had been sliped and heated up pretty hot. I also go there at 3:30, which put him there well after closing time. I'm not complaining- at least I can get it done without having to call the big brown truck.

I don't know how far out in the sticks you are, but from here Walmart is 100+ miles away from me in any direction. Isn't that the new definition of "middle of nowhere" :)

Anyway, glad you got it done. I had to drive 225 miles RT for mine, I just combined it with the trip to Walmart. :-laf BTW, my $50 included no refacing so it sounds like you got a fair shake.

Shopping in rural areas stinks, but at least the air doesn't so bad. That's what I keep telling my sister who lives in San Diego. :D

Takes me an ENTIRE three minutes to drive to work. Seven if I get stuck behind an Amish buggy. That be FIVE days a week! I experience shock if I drive into town and see more than seven vehicles at one time.

:-{}

I'm in the same boat Daniel. No shop in town or nearby that will bore the flywheel. Heck even trying to find a bushing or bearing locally ain't gonna happen. Hard to order parts on the internet or phone with cash only:mad:. I just dropped off a flywheel today at the 'highly recommended' machine shop today for a resurfacing. Old bushing 'looked' ok.

It's crazy how small of a town Moab is with all the off roading there is.

I'll be back there next week. Won't have my truck though, riding down there.

I grew up in a small town, of about 2000 people. Graduated high school with 30 kids in my class. Pretty much any store other than gas pumps, a bit of groceries was an hr drive.
