Sorry for the incorrect info. How do the Nitto's ride? Are there any vibration issues or excessive noise? I'm seriously considering this tire with a 4" lift.

Fencebuilders,

What size did you try on your truck? Were they the 35"?

Do you think they would have cleared with a 4" lift? Did anyone at the tire dealer mention how loud they were from previous customers?

How much did they want for them?
They were 35"s. I think they would work with a 4" . No comments on noise. I was quoted $356. 00 :{ But an alternative may be the Avon 35-12. 50-17 quoted at $206. 78 each;)

My feelings exactly, not to mention they were discounted down from

$445. 00 . I am having them bring in a set of the Avons on the Ultra type 164 in a 17-9 for me to fit on my truck. Looks like about $1,600. 00 o. t. d. if they dont rub and i like 'em. Any one have any background on Avon tire quality? Thanks,Mark.

I looked on the Avon website and I didn't see any tires in the 35/12. 5017 size you mentioned. Is this a new size? Which tire is it?

I like the Ultra Type 164 you plan to use.

Any idea what the offset is?

I was with Kent K from T-Rex suspension on Tuesday. He told me that he made an exclusive deal with Weld Racing for a wheel. It will be the Cheyenne 17" with proper back spacing. Forged aluminum, polished shiny like Chrome. He needs get together an order of $100 Large. ($100,000) They will be a little spendy but ask and you shall receive. [/IMG]#ad

Make sure any wheel you get it has to be forged anything thing else will either crack or worse break with the load of a 33 or taller tire.

I have talked to many a manufacture and forged is the strongest.

Hey, Gents,

Nice wheel discussion! You guys are doing a heck of a lot of research! Check our website - there's a picture on the products page called "Zero to Hero" that shows a Second Gen Ram we fitted with American Eagles and Toyo 35x12. 5x18's. We like the AA wheel. It's strong for a cast wheel, but it doesn't have the correct offset/backspace, nor is it hubcentric for the Dodge Rams.

The wheel we're soon to be offering is really special. T. Rex designed this wheel and Weld is building it for us. We are the only ones who will be selling it. It is a forged, one piece, chrome (no polishing!) wheel, and built hubcentric for the 03-04 Rams - meaning the counterbore (where your axle hub fits) is _exactly_ the correct size. This is really important because hubcentricity is the key element in the wheel's load-bearing characteristics. We picked the "Cheyenne 8" style because it's conservative and classy. It's an 18x8. 5" wheel and has a +40mm offset, so it sits back, inside the wheelwell like it's supposed to - just like the OE wheel. We chose this size specifically to fit the Toyo Open Country MT 35x12. 5x18 E RATED tire. We will have this wheel for the 2nd Gen trucks as well. We have tested this setup with our suspension and, because all the dimensions are correct, IT WILL NOT RUB.

We've been working on this project for some time and now. There's been some mystery behind the whole process, but basically it went like this:

Three aftermarket manufacturers who are on the cutting edge all need each other. They have a vision, a formula that works and looks better than stock. T. Rex has the best suspension for the Dodge Rams. You put the gnarly T. Rex suspension on and now your OE tires and wheels look anemic. You want some more ground clearance as well as better traction and cornering. Who has an appropriate tire of the appropriate dimension? You know you want a 35" product - 33's are a little small and 37" are a little large. There are a lot of D rated tires out there, some that ride nicely - but you suspect the sidewalls are not stout enough for your truck - you've heard stories of "death wobble" etc. from the common 315's that are everywhere, so you're already suspicious. Besides, your truck came equipped with E rated tires. An E rating isn't just load rating. Many D rated tires have heavy load ratings, but they don't have the ply rating and sidewall toughness that makes an E rated tire. One of the only choices is the Toyo MT. By the way, despite the aggressive tread pattern, they're also pretty darn quiet.

So how do you put this nasty 18" tire on your nasty truck that has nasty suspension? You get yourself a nasty wheel like a Weld Evo Cheyenne 8 by T. Rex! Weld and Toyo both know that without suspension like ours (and the corporate guys still call it a "lift kit" - despite my admonitions and threats!) they don't sell their products, so they've supported us immensely in this endeavor. I've got 200 of these wheels coming to me as soon as they're forged and cut. That P. O. cost T. Rex a lot of money, not to mention the time spent measuring, testing and head-scratching. Anyway, the end product looks so sweet and performs so well that it's a sure winner.

Our goal is to equip trucks at the dealer level with our suspension and these components. Today I spoke with the GM of a local San Diego Dodge dealer. He expressed concern that he had three "lifted" trucks out in front of his dealership that had been there for four weeks - despite all the incentives and zero percent financing etc. ! I wonder why! He had a 4x4 CTD with powdercoated Transamerica parts under it and chrome wheels wrapped in D rated mudders sticking at least 3" out of each fenderwell! This just says that the guy is out of touch with his target consumer. The guy buying the truck isn't a 19 year old kid who just stepped out of a swamp somewhere in Alabama! He's a mature adult that has done his research and wants a useful, functional, good-looking truck and isn't about to plunk down 40k on a good truck with a bunch of useless, inappropriate, non-functional fluff bolted to it!

This is where Weld and Toyo and T. Rex come in.

Expect a huge discount on those wheels when T. Rex initially offers them. It's an excellent product and I want them out on the street. They retail for $575 each. I want to sell them to TDR members for _significantly_ lower than that! I'm also working with Toyo on a group buy plan. If we get enough people involved, we lower the price a heck of a lot!

Best Regards,

Kent Kroeker

Tell me $300/wheel, and you've got another buyer. I appreciate your work. Weld has always been a great wheel.

Hey Nick! Man I thought you hated Weld! :p

Jus ribbin ya man!:D

You'll probably see a $500 wheel. Sounds like these are custom made by weld for T-rex. That isn't cheap. A little bird told me that it costs like 120 large for that kind of deal. Weld is a huge company and doesn't just whip out a couple of sets any time some rich guy comes up with an idea.

Greg

Greg, that's true what you say about Weld not just catering to anyone. I have fought tooth and nail for a year to get this going. When Gregory Smith, Weld's directory of Marketing, took our plan to Mr. Weld and the production guys, it was immediately shot down because they said, "Dodge has such a small market share, we just won't sell enough of these Dodge-specific wheels to make it worth our effort. " So in order to get Weld to make a SKU for this part, T. Rex had to "step up to the plate. " We had to buy 200 wheels _in advance_. We're not waiting for advance orders from our customers to make this happen. The wheels are on the way, regardless. It's happening because T. Rex is digging deep and fronting some serious cash. We are not a big company, nor are we funded by rich guys. We're just really enthusiastic about this project. Gregory Smith has championed our cause like no other because he understands the idea of synergy. He believes in Dodge trucks. He's seen the sales numbers, the technology, the quality and longevity of these trucks. He knows that the new Dodge is an up-and-comer, so there will be a continued market for this wheel.

And he also knows that you don't put a beautiful, work-of-art, forged aluminum wheel in front of a coil spacer or red spring! Like fillet minion with french fries - just doesn't work! Hence the relationship between Weld and T. Rex and not Weld and blah, blah lift kit company whose kit is designed for a 4. 5" backspace wheel and whose geometry is guaranteed to ruin your wheel bearings and thrash your steering components.

But the lift kit companies continue to say, "ya gotta go as wide as ya go high, Sonny! - 'cause that's the way we've done it for twenty-five years!"

Wrong. You have to design things from the ground up with thoughtful consideration to every detail in order to _enhance_ strength, performance and durability - instead of ruining everything for some vague cosmetic benefit.

We won't be able to sell these wheels for $300. That's about what it costs Weld to _make_ each wheel! If you've ever looked closely at 18" Weld EVO product, you'll understand this.

We're working on some special TDR group pricing that will be significantly _below_ $500. More details to follow.

We're off to Baja. Everyone have a great weekend!

Dang I was just starting to lick my chops on that one till I realized that size won't take a 33:{

The Nitto Terra Grappler's and Toyo Open Country need 9. 5

You know you want a 35" product - 33's are a little small and 37" are a little large.

Careful now cuz everyone is different and if your like me you don't want higher but just a little more wheel well fill while still keeping some towability with 3. 73's

Expect a huge discount on those wheels when T. Rex initially offers them.

If a good all terrain D or E rated tire comes out in a 33 I will probably be all over them so lets keep our fingers crossed. Moving those wheels IMO will be dependent on more tire sizes with proper load capacity cuz we all don't want 35's & mud terrains.

I think this is a great project Kent and hope you will keep us informed.

I was looking at 20x8. 5 with 6" back space like these only because there are Nitto and Toyo AT's in a 33" that would fit.

I may have to wait for those T-rex wheels and hope for an 18" tire that is 33 tall.
