In the countdown to the release of the Chrysler LH cars, one of the major automotive magazines interviewed some of the Chrysler engineers. One of hte quotes stands out in my mind.
I can't repeat it verbatim, but I can relay the gist...
"I can't believe they pay me to work. I am having so much fun, I'd do this for FREE!"
This was coming from a guy who worked on the 24V 3. 5 liter engine program. His job was to work out valvetrain design. When he asked what the parameters were for his engine, he was told that the engine redline would be governed for 6200, but that the guys working on the bottom end of the engine wanted to try out some "hot" versions in prototypes. So, all on his own, he set about designing a valvetrain that would be reliable to 8500.
So, the 214HP OHC 3. 5 in the Intrepid may have been governed to 6200, but the engineers made it entirely capable of an 8500 RPM dyno run. Why? Because they could. Because nobody told them to scrimp on a few hours of design work necessary to make it that much better. And because nobody told manufacturing to change it to inferior design... Because it was "thier" motor, and they were dang proud of it!
Now THAT is how you get the best dang cars... Not having some arrogant jerk in Germany tell you that "you suck".
