Since Sterling offers the ISB as an option for their 60K+ trucks like HEMI Dart points out, and the ISB is a medium duty engine ... and DC ownes Sterling/Western Star/Freightliner ... my question is when will I be able to go to the Dodge dealer and say I'll take a 3500 ISB with an Eaton 9 speed and a Meritor 20K rear axil and Bendex air breaks? I think at that point all this light duty / medium duty discussion will be put to rest.

cummins rules!

BTW, a friend handles parts for GM and tells me he is seeing a ton of allison trannys. To be fair he is not sure if they are for the caddys or the trucks... ...

Caddys??? Duramaxipad/Allison Coupe DeVilles??? LOL... Those barges probably ought to get a big Spicer rearend and air brakes fer sure... .

Sure sounds funny but I am told that some of the caddy's came with a transmission with the allison label..... (really)

Maybe it's the same car transmission they now put behind the duramax :D

A bit of history rumored about the Cummins engine. Some time ago several engineers from CASE tractor moved over to Cummins. When Cummins saw a market developing for PU market these engineers remembered a CASE design sitting on the "shelf" the approach was made and CASE licensed the engine to Cummins.

Hopefully this is not old news and sheds additional light on the Big C.

FAT CAT, My bet is the Dodge dealer will tell you to pack sand if you ask him to put that transmission in there. But--- if you go to your friendly neighborhood Cummins dealer he could set you up with the proper bellhousing to do what you suggest. Just start cuttin' up the floorboards and the crossmembers and you could put that puppy in, personally I don't think it would be worth all the trouble.

I think the whole point to be made here is that "most" Cummins powered pickups will still be running when brand F & C are lookin' for an overhaul. The EPA must agree because they gave the ISB in our little trucks a higher classification than Ford or Chevy. :)
