Man i screwed up. I hate playing the game with the auto trans and beefing it up to handle the power i want. It will cost over 2500 dallors no matter what... . I bought this truck and payed more for the auto... Yes it maybe . 5 seconds faster but i could do alot more with around 1500 dallors laying around and have that . 5 second smashed... ERRRR.

I WANT A 6 SPEED MANUAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone have the exact same truck as mine with a 6 speed that wants a 48re. ???? LETS TRADE! :--)

Nick :(

Have you ever driven a stick shift diesel? Maybe you should, you might change your mind for racing purposes (for towing, the 6 speed owns obviously).

I went from a 01. 5 6 speed ram to my 03 auto. I bought my 01. 5 for towing and it was great. But it wasn't fast off the line. The engine was there, but I couldn't row the gears fast enough without feeling like I was going to grind it.

The other thing a lot of people don't realize is that every time you shift a turbodiesel, you loose your boost (even if you're real fast and abusive to the transmission you'll loose some). The auto keeps the load on the engine during the shifts and boost stays up.

Be careful what you wish for. :) You'd end up spending a grand on a new clutch anyway. .

If you stricktly want to go fast you don't want a 6 speed.

BUT if you want to race at say 30,000 GCVW then I think my 6 speed will smoke ya, LOL

Like mensioned the 6 speed will cost you around $900 for a good clutch also.

As with anything else in life, you want to play..... you have to play. My 97 3500 cost me a pretty penny to get it in to the 14 sec club which included a DTT trans to go with it. I have had a few fast cars and all I will tell you is that power costs money, ask any of the people on this forum which have trucks over 450 HP stick or auto. Trust me Nick, I too know what you feel as I am also waiting for more goodies to come out so that I can start to bomb my truck and yep, that trans is the first thing I am going to bomb... ... stock autos suck although the 48re is not too bad.

I love my 6-spd and will probably never go back to an auto in a truck, but I'm not planning on any racing either. Usually start out in 2nd, and the 2-3 shift is a long one that doesn't like to be rushed. The truck will start out in 3rd, but you will be frying $900+ clutches on a regular basis. If you want it for running the 1/4 and frying rice at the stoplights, the auto was the right choice, but like everyone has said, if ya wanna play, ya gotta pay.

:D

Do you know anyone in the CMC????

4. 10's help out with that :D

I also start in 2nd if I am to a dead stop, but for a slight rolling stop go no lower then 3rd

Now if they could get it to shift like the 6 speed in my Trans-Am... ... ... Dam it would be bad fast :--) be hard on drive line parts to I think

Wayne drag races his NV4500 like it's a Lenco... . you might want to ask him how he does it... . He's hard on parts, though... :-laf

My next truck will have an NV5600 in it. No doubt about it.

Dan: Any particular reason you don't want your truck anymore?

How much do you want for it? It's got everything I want in a truck... except for the 4. 10:1 ratio.

I preferred the manual trans. but bought

the 48RE. Someone in my section of town

has a new green 2500 with a manual, I sure

like to listen to it when he starts off, but

compared to my automatic he appears to be pulling

the slack out of a mile long train compared to

the promptness of my 48 RE when it pulls away from

a stop. Also he sounds like he may be lugging

the engine in a 35 mph zone by operating in a

higher gear than he should. I grant you that he'll go much further without having to pay for

a brake job also will save on fuel cost.

I made the same mistake last time around and now that I have my NV5600, I'll never go back. Although clutches have to be upgraded for bombing, It's still way less expensive than modifying an auto (as you've discovered, no doubt). I tend to think of clutches as temporary items anyway, like brakes, batteries, exhaust systems, shocks, etc. When the clutch needs to be replaced, I'll put in a South Bend even if everything is still stock.

That having been said, these guys are right when they say that the 6 spd will never keep up to an auto for drag racing (all other things being equal). If you wanna race and don't tow, then you probably bought the right truck.

WOW! Back when I ordered my truck in 8/ '03 that was thing I took like a week to figure out... . rather or not to get the 48re or the 6 speed my very first car was the old family van that was 3/4 ton full size Chevy van with a 6. 2 Detroit Diesel in it. It was a lot of fun to stand on to get off the line and what not but I also helped my dad put 4. 5 R400 4 speed transmission's too. . (. 5 being that when we sold it OD/4th gear quit working but the other three worked fine) I will only be doing some towing in the winter and other then that my truck is a daily driver and I do like to get up and go a lot..... if the stock clutch wears out on me in 40 or 50k miles I will put a south bend in it and then run that hopefully for 80 or 100 k miles until I get another truck

Matt's getting closer to the edge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn - I should have guessed 12 WEEKS, not 12 MONTHS! :D

I went from the 5 speed to the 48RE. I will say for towing I prefer the manual. Overall the auto is so much nicer to drive. Guess depends what your priority is. my 2 cents

Has anyone actually switched from a 6 speed to an auto in a 3rd gen? Would it be economically fiesable? I'm kinda sick of shifting my truck in traffic and have thought about switching to an auto but I'm sure it would be so much easier to just buy a new truck.

Wow, am I pleased to see all the other members that love the NV5600 as much as I do. I tow and find the 6 speed a vast improvement over the (47 re) auto I had in my 94 and the 5 speed in my 98. 5. I always launch the beast in 1st with no throttle when starting from a dead stop, the low-end governor is amazing, even on a steep hill with my 15K trailer. I have the 4. 10's and this rig is a towin' fool:D . I have driven the 48 RE and I found it to be much better than the 47RE, but I still prefer the 6 speed for my own personal applications. The only problem I had was the clutch rattle and the tsb took care of that completely.

Dan's truck has a lot of add-ons and is a really nice truck... . he's asking a reasonable amount for it, but it's more than I'd like to spend at this point...

Matt - right about now, I can't even see 'the edge'... no worries.

Ohhh... you guys are getting me worried. I just spent the last 2 weeks convincing myself that this time around (pricing to order and 04. 5) I would go with an auto... ... ...
