I have a new 2018 ram 2500 Cummings with 360 miles on it and I get a knock at idle and while I accelerate. Is this normal for the 6.7 this new with this low miles?

Is it a knock or "ping" reminiscent of a gasser? Don't know where you are, but the winter blends will do this "ping" rattle. My 5.9 is so noisy, I do not notice, but the 6.7 is quiet, so I hear it.

Was it knocking when you test drove it? These common rail engines make a sound (to me) like fuel injection pulses from the injectors or in other words, like a modern diesel engine. More of a tick than a knock. Is yours ticking or knocking?

Cheers, Ron

I guess if it is a knock, he maybe getting a new engine...….at least I would be. :D

Desktop mechanic's guide to diagnosing the modern diesel engine:
1. knock (with smoke. no oil pres Very bad)
2. tick (Normal, most of the time)
3. ping (normal, unless oil pressure dropping)
4. Whine (Tires, turbo good; driver bad)

Print and tape to dash.

I'm just having fun... I think you're hearing normal sound of the engine.

Didn’t notice while test driving

Are you located where it's very cold? If you're concerned, go by the dealer and ask them if they mind listening to it and if it's normal. Mine is pretty good about this type of thing. Let us know. Ron

So true. When I got my 04, it was a whole different deal. Kinda missed the 12 valve racket, but the neighbors were happy. The strange thing is that they stopped dragging out their garbage pails when I came down the block in the morning.

I had a labrador that went nuts when she heard my 12V when I came home. She got out of the house once and I couldn't find her until I drove around the neighborhood and could hear her barking. No barking with the '06. Loved that 12V.

Ah... The noise that my 89 use to make... I use to drive the neighbors crazy on garbage day. I'd drive through the neighborhood early in the morning the neighbors would think I was the garbage truck running early. Can't tell you how many people I saw in their Pj's racing their cans to the street only to see y 89 roll by...… Lol

Hey Brian, there's another thread in the 4th Gen where member has a new 2500 with the same complaint. Last I read, dealer had cleared the truck with no problems. Recommend you check it out and see how he is doing. Sounds like yours may be doing the same thing his is. Let us know how it works out.

Cheers, Ron
