Anyone know which one is better?

My '94 O. E one looked like this one on the right.

Now this type is offered on the left.

go with the o. e. style... . i just replaced a water pump on my uncles gasser and saw that the new pumps that chrysler puts in them has a plastic impeller.....

one on the right is like the ones they use on the 24 valves. Maybe just newer design. It looks like the one I recently put in my 95. No problems with it.

This is what the impeller looks like on the O. E '94 Bosch p/n 97083. I got one from Rock Auto. It is cheaper than N. A. P. A. I dunno.

I though there was some talk at the DTR one time that the impeller that looks like a gas engine WP is the wrong one.

I put an aftermarket water pump on and it looked similar to the one on the left blades were different put you could seem them. Been in for 7 to 8 years now ( Mule has 212,000 on it).

The newer replacement ones from Cummins have the shield welded onto the impeller, whereas the original one didn't. There were a couple of different size pulleys over the years. This will change the speed the pump turns at effecting coolant flow, so get the correct pump. Shadrach

The one on the right has a cavatation plate on it they were changed some time ago I think they have changed back to the one on the left carquest auto parts have the one like on the left (cavatation plate) they both work fine.

I know as far a pumps are concerned the one on the left in the first post would be an open face pump, works fine. The one on the right would be a closed face pump, much more efficiant design (will move more fluid with less power because once on the vanes it has to go out the end, cannot go around the vane) I am not sure why they do not use the closed style more in engines other than they are probably more $$$ to produce, but if you can turn them slower and still get the coooling they should free up more HP.
