I know as far a pumps are concerned the one on the left in the first post would be an open face pump, works fine. The one on the right would be a closed face pump, much more efficiant design (will move more fluid with less power because once on the vanes it has to go out the end, cannot go around the vane) I am not sure why they do not use the closed style more in engines other than they are probably more $$$ to produce, but if you can turn them slower and still get the coooling they should free up more HP.
