I have a friend that has a transplanted 5. 9 cummins into a 91 chevy crew cab dually. I believe this is a implement motor and I think it is similar to the first generation dodge cummins? He bought the truck already converted.

It runs ok and will get 14mpg pulling. The thing is it seems to be flat, no real torque curve, like maybe it is intended to run at a constant rpm, like for a irragation pump?

Does anyone know about these motors and what can be done to them for more power? It seems to run ok but labors to build speed on the higher end shifts. Also he doesn't want to kill the mileage as he puts quit a few miles on this truck and most of them are loaded miles.

It is like night and day differance when you compare it to my 97 whith a #11 tst plate, 3k govenor springs, straight through exaust, and K&N air filter. I really don't know anything about the earlier cummins motors, so I am not much help for him.

Does it have a Bosch VE pump like the first gens?

Also, don't worry about losing mpg necessarily. Mine is mildly BOMBed, pulls WAY better than it did stock, and gets better mpg than before the mods. Have your cake and eat it too... :D

Wow--I never knew that. Do you know how the Lucas pumps differ from the VE, regarding power, reliability, longevity, etc. ?

I think the pump might be a ruzenmaster(sp)? I am guessing that the only modifications that could be done would be injectors and turbo air flow stuff, without tearing the motor apart or sending the pump off.

Midnite,

I am unsure of the pros and cons of the Lucas injection pumps compared to Bosh. I believe that Lucas pumps where used in industrial and agricultural applications. I don't know what would happen if somebody put one on their Ram.

erempel,

I have not heard of Roosa Master pumps being used on B's. But just because I haven’t heard of it doesn’t mean that they are not used. These pumps can be turned up too!

If I am not mistaken,Roosamaster was bought out by Stanadyne?? !! Although, I have been wrong before!!

The early B series 210 hp marine engines also had Lucas/Cav pumps.

I had a marine Perkins diesel with a Cav rotary pump... design looked similar from what I remember. I know from experience that they can be completely rebuilt for about $400 by most diesel pump shops. I never played with any adjustment other than governor.
