I do know of one guy that did it by removing the bed. I don't know exactly how he did it, but if you have the right equipment, I think it might be easier.

I think it's more easy to remove the tank, I have done other trucks the other way but not a 3rd gen.

When I did mine I also removed the drive line for more room to work. taking the tank down to 0 miles on the overhead is a good idea and also have a 5 gal can so once you get the tank out you can tip it and siphon out the last of the fuel which makes clean up of the shavings more easy plus install is more easy with it completely empty.

Glad you like the kit. It will allow you to get that last few gallons in much quicker. The main benefit is the time saved to get to a full tank.

Ain't that the truth! I've always been a real stickler for filling the tank to the point that I can see fuel in the neck, so I'm sure the savings in time for me is greater than it is for those that just fill it up until the first click, but even then, you'd benefit because you'd get 5 more gallons or so in the tank. For myself, I think the mod easily saves me 5 minutes every time I refuel - probably more - and definitely closer to 10 minutes when I fill up at a truck stop. I just filled the tank for the second time since the mod and my results were exactly the same as the first time - with a large truck-stop nozzle, I locked it on wide open (something I could never do before), waited for it to click off, then nursed it for no more than 30 seconds or so, and I could see the fuel in the neck just below the vent return hole. I still can't believe how much time I spent collecting diesel fuel on the bottom of my shoes with my '93 and the first few tank-fulls with the '05 - what a difference!

Finally....

... decent weather and an empty tank allowed me to finally install my kit today!!! Oo. Went 65 miles on the low fuel light. After installation was complete I proceeded to fill it up !! 38. 2 gallons till nozzle clicked, then only. 8 of a gallon to reach the brim. WOOHOO !!!!!! It did appear there may have been 2 or 3 gallons left in tank when it was out of truck, and yes I have put 41. 4 gallons in this thing before, not bad for a tank that's supposed to hold 35 gallons. Thanks Spooled -up !! Mark

To those subscribed to this thread...

I just sent out revised and updated instructions with some tips and tricks I've recently heard of from people that have installed the kit. If you didn't get a new set, send me an e-mail and I'll send you a copy as a PDF file. I sent them to everyone I had an e-mail address for. I recently got a new computer, so I don't have some of you on the new one.

Happy vent kit owner

I installed Spooled Up's kit last weekend. . went really well. Tank now fills to the neck with no problem. 38. 3 gal tank! One question... . what are the small vent nipples on the top front and back of the tank? I could see where there was some leakage from the front (lower) vent so I plugged it. Put a 2 ft. hose on the top one so I can at least put a filter on it. Should I plug that one too, or is that a way to allow positive pressure in the tank?

Since installing a transfer aux tank have not had any problem get main tank full at click off, 35 gallons, but aux tank has 1 to 2 gallons worth of air in it, transferflow told me that was normal and if I really work at it can coach the extra gallon or to in that tank also. Before the install could only get 33 gallons in main tank.

Someone said those barbs on the top of the tank are for the molding process. Someone else said they are for the gas trucks and some of their emissions equipment.

Happy Vent kit user

I installed the kit this morning. Took about 3 1/2 hours start to finish working by

myself. I took my time, and the hardest part was lifting the tank back up. Very good instructions and pictures. I put 36. 6 gallons in my 34 gallon tank after installing the kit. I had run it down to DTE said 15 miles. It sure cuts down on the foaming! Thanks David for a well engineered and very economical bomb!

Mine was done at a HUGE bomb party NWBombers had at Rob Hansons spread on Feb 26/27th.

I put a set of DiPricol gauges in an '05 for a guy (Boost/EGT/OP/transmission temp) while Byron Haner and about 4 other NWBomber guys did my tank.

Filled it right up to the top after leaving Sunday afternoon..... but I had to get the attendant to start the pump 3 times (she was too busy reading her Enquirer to know I wanted more than $20 each time) so, I don't know how much fuel it took.

Love the "to the top" option.

I also changed the fuel filter after getting home - about 125 miles away.

I also had mind done at Rob Hanson's Northwest Bombers Bomb Party!

I think there was a total of 6 3rd Gen that got the Fuel Tank Modification!

I filled up Thursday night, DTE said 10 miles to go. I put 36. 941 gallons in, and only took about a minute to top it off with about 1/2 gallon till it was full in the neck! That is a heck of a lot better than 10 minutes to baby feed the last 4 to 5 gallons! :D

Spooled-up,

Thanks for the great retrofit and the super price for the Northwest Bombers!

spooled-up,

THANKS for a great BOMB, I had the old kit that we finally put it on at NWBombers party. The newer system may? be a bit nicer but I have no complaints. I put $75. 00 in the tank reswiped the credit card and then put in another $20. 00 so I guess that is a compalint. $95. 00 to fill up :--)

As I fueled on high speed, it clicked off I added another gallon on a medium or so speed, it then clicked off again, then slowly added another 1/2 gallon. That last gallon and a half total time took less than a minute. Before to top the tank I was fueling for literally 10 minutes after it clicked off.

fj40dave, your tank went the quickest and easiest. I think the hardest part was undoing the wires on top of the tank. I could never bend my hand and arm up there.

Man, I was working away on Brad's dash pod gauges and you guys showed up, got-r-done, and were over to Brad's truck ready to do his :--)

That job would have taken me probably all day

Thanks Steve, and the rest of the "Mod Squad"

NWBombers rock!

Finally found the time to do Dave's vent-kit this morning. It started raining so what a better time anyway. As others have stated Dave's directions was pretty straight forward. Took about 2 1/2 hrs at a friends shop, a lot of that time was searching were he kept all his tools I needed. About half way through the install my friend shows up, and lends a hand. One person can do this mod, but man two sure helps things go faster.

Ended up having or guesstimating 3 or 4 gallons when tank was dropped. I filled up afterwards with 35+ gallons. Clicked off and less than a minute before I could see fuel at vent opening. Thanks Dave for your kit, and directions. Oo.

My tank probably took the longest to do as it had half a tank of fuel in it.

That was quite a crew we had doing the tank modification... Thanks again fella's!

Tony,

I'll bet you had more than 3-4 gals in there. I ran mine to 0 MTE, fuel gauge was on E. Then I dropped the tank and drained it COMPLETELY. I recovered almost 7 gal. When I refilled it took over 42 gal.

Fireman you may be right I didn't drain the tank when I had it out of the truck. I ran mine to 0 DTE then 30 miles past 0.

Looks like the tanks hold about 41-42 gallons depending on whether you have a short or long bed then. Guess DC doesn't want us to run out of fuel. It'd be a selling point to me to know that the truck has a 40 gallon tank instead of a 35!

finally got the new kit installed its works great dte 15 filled up 37. 7 the middle fuel fitting was a bear filed down one end of a hack saw blade and made it work thanks again dave
